Printer's code: 1946.566 which I believe indicates that the book was printed in May 1966. The book, which was the forty-first of the series, was first published in 1966 (this edition), w…ith a revised edition in 1980. There were just three different jacket designs. With 12 plates in full colour and 118 line drawings. ***Near fine in red textured boards with yellow titles to the spine and front board. The covers are beautifully clean and unmarked. No creases or tears. Corners sharp. No bumps. Page block edges nice and clean. No reading lean to the binding. Internally the book is also near fine - extremely clean with a neat owner's name at the top of the front free endpaper, but with no other inscriptions or annotations. Printed by lithography on matt-finish paper. No marks. No creases. No cracking to the binding. Spine tight. ***In a near fine colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 5/- net - with a publisher's 7/- net reprice sticker over the printed price. Unusually, the flap also states 'Library of Congress Catalog Card No. 67-10967' (which refers to the publication in the USA) - not normally seen on Observer's Books. The dustwrapper is complete without any loss, with just some rubbing at the extremities, commensurate with age and handling, mainly at the top and tail of the spine. No chips, creases or tears. No browning or fading to the spine. ***147mm x 95mm. 150 pages including a detailed six-page Index at the back of the book. ***'It is a surprising fact that in the fast-moving, scientific world of today, the popularity of such a "reactionary" subject as heraldry is greater than it has ever been. Perhaps the explanation is that we are romantics at heart and secretly hanker after the pageantry of medieval days, when there were knights and armour and fluttering pennons. This book is a concise survey of heraldry in Great Britain, beginning with its purpose and history, and describing its present state. For the most part it is devoted to the rules of heraldry which will provide reliable groundwork for the student who is new to the subject. Heraldry is part of our heritage and after studying this work the reader will be deeply aware of the dignity and usefulness of the coat of arms. Whilst the Observer's books from this period are not uncommon, many of the books were handled by children and consequently show a lot of wear and tear.
