The following is excerpted from the dust-jacket write-up : "From her impoverished childhood in Colorado coal-mining camps to her final years as a victim of McCarthyism , Agnes Smedley's life (1892 - 1950) was one of intense and often dramatic political commitment, as well as personal disappointment. Country school teacher, birth control pioneer, socialist journalist, author, novelist, feminist, freedom fighter, and associate of the early Freudians, she participated in some of the most important social and political revolutions of the Twentieth Century. Her friends, associates, and lovers reflect the diversity of her activism: Emma Goldman, Margaret Sanger, Ladjit Rai, Nehru, Chou En-lai, Edgar Snow, and Käthy Kollwitz figured prominently.
