Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. The Utah War remains an understudied but important moment in western history as the United States wrestled with its political future. There are few primary accounts from this war, but one of the best comes from William Clark, a young teamster hired by Russell, Majors and Waddell, the West's greatest freighters. Clark's narrative, "A Trip Across the Plains in 1857," was not published until 1922 and only then in an obscure journal with little annotation, so for the last hundred years, this work has been a valuable but obscure document. In On the Overland Trails with William Clark William P. MacKinnon and Kenneth L. Alford have remedied this historiographical oversight by providing material entirely missing from the original printing, including an explanation of the Utah War's origins and prosecution; maps by which to chart Clark's travels; illustrations to enliven major players; and annotations to clarify the sometimes arcane people, places, incidents, and issues mentioned. Also included for the first time is an account of the manuscript's colorful provenance.

1/55. 29pp. Octavo [23 cm] Blue printed wrappers. Near fine. Signed by MacKinnon on the limitation page. Collector's Edition Keepsake for volume 11 of the Kingdom of the West series, 'At Sword's Point, Part 2: A Documentary History of the Utah War, 1858-1859.' The Utah War of 1857-58, the unprecedented armed confrontation between Mormon Utah Territory and the U.S. government, was the most extensive American military action between the Mexican and Civil Wars. The Kingdom in the West Series, subtitled 'The Mormons and the American Frontier,' is an award-winning series begun in 1997 that explored the story of the Latter-day Saints and their part in the greater history of the Western Frontier. The history of the Mormons in the American West is so sweeping it is easy to ignore episodes that, for one reason or another, found no place in the traditional annals of the region. This series explored the story of the Mormon people and their part in the greater history of the Western Frontier. Primary source documents, many of them previously unpublished, comprise this series' core. Signed.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Biff and whiff, baker's fog and lu'sknikn, pie social and milling frolic - these are just a few examples of the distinctive language of Cape Breton Island, where a puck is a forceful blow and a Cape Breton pork pie is filled with dates, not pork. The first regional dictionary devoted to the island's linguistic and cultural history, the Dictionary of Cape Breton English is a fascinating record of the island's rich vocabulary. Dictionary entries include supporting quotations culled from the editors' extensive interviews with Cape Bretoners and considerable study of regional variation, as well as definitions, selected pronunciations, parts of speech, variant forms, related words, sources, and notes, giving the reader in-depth information on every aspect of Cape Breton culture. A substantial and long-awaited work of linguistic research that captures Cape Breton's social, economic, and cultural life through the island's language, the Dictionary of Cape Breton English can be read with interest by Backlanders, Bay byes, and those from away alike.
