Hardcover. Condizione: New. So many railroaders and managers thought that the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific railroads would merge that quite a few locomotives and some cabooses were prepared for the merger by being painted in a new merger-ready paint scheme. The Reagan administration rejected the merger as anti-competitive. The selected paint scheme was colorful and attractive. Since the merger was not approved, the paint scheme did not last long. Quite a few photographs show the equipment freshly painted or still in excellent condition. The equipment wasnt around long enough to get grungy. The Southern Pacific Railroad and Santa Fe Railway were so sure their proposed merger would be approved by the Federal Government, that they went ahead and painted over 400 locomotives in the new companys paint scheme. The merger never happened, but their wishful thinking resulted in a colorful and unique period in the history of these two venerable railroads. Hardcover. Condizione: New. There is a long list of photographers whose work was selected for this title which features the first-generation diesels of the minority builders on the roster. Most locomotives are painted in the blue and yellow paint scheme used before the yellow warbonnet. The original delivery paint schemes start out the photographic coverage of each model. Most locomotives were delivered in the black with silver or white stripes paint scheme. Some of these photographs are in B&W as the delivery paint schemes appeared before color film was commonly used by rail enthusiasts. There are quite a few pictures of the ALCO PAs. That locomotive was in my opinion just a neat looking locomotive and in silver with a red warbonnet is sharp. There are only 3 pictures which are small of the Erie-builts which didnt last long on the roster. Most pictures were taken in California but a number of pictures at Dearborn Station highlight the station switchers of ALCO and Fairbanks-Morse. Contents: Introduction, pg. 7, ALCO Locomotives, pp. 8-89, Santa Fes Switching Subsidiaries ALCOs, pg. 90, Illinois Northern ALCOs, pg. 90, Los Angeles Junction Railway, pg. 91, Baldwin Locomotives, pp. 92-106, Fairbanks-Morse Locomotives, pp. 107-120, Miscellaneous Locomotive Builders (Davenport, Whitcomb, Morrison-Knudsen), pp. 121-122, Slug Units, pp. 123-128.
