Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good-. Condizione sovraccoperta: No Dust Jacket. Illustrated by Edward Burne-Jones (illustratore). Second Edition (First Thus). Second Edition. Published by Macmillan and Co in 1874. Xvi, 247+ 56 pp Publisher's Catalogue dated 1873. It is notable for being the first book illustrated by Edward Burne-Jones when first published in 1857. In the original rust-red cloth PICTORIAL boards, decorated in black and gilt to the front and spine, rear cover plain, with the cover illustrations derived from Edward Burne-Jones' frontispiece and title. A very uncommon edition, which actually appears to be scarcer than the first edition, and is certainly in a more attractive binding. This copy HAS the 56 page publisher's catalogue at the rear, present in some copies, but apparently not all. Catalogue dated 1873. Plain black endpapers. Engraved title and frontispiece with tissue guard (guard browning, plates clean). Printed Title with vignette illustration (also pictured on Front cover). No Inscriptions or Marks. Generally very clean and free of foxing, tho the occasional spot appears here and there, a few near the inner edge, with a little more near the end, and on the reverse of the black endpapers. Overall pretty clean and most viewed foxing is light and unobtrusive. Illustrations, tailpieces, etc, done by Edward BURNE-JONES. Maclaren asked him in 1854 to illustrate the twenty-three ballads that make up the book, beginning with "The Elf- Folk," for which "Whisper, Whisper" (Frontispiece) is the main design. He initially did over eighty illustrations for the publication, but only three were used. This 2nd Edition seems to have the same 3 major illustrations, plus head and tail pieces only as in the First Edition. The vignette shown on the Printed title was originally at the end of the poem 'The Neck'. This, the frontispiece and the title page were the only main subjects eventually used as illustrations when the book was published in 1857. The book is mainly in Poetry (the Ballads and Metrical Tales of the Title) , but there is also some Prose. The 'Introduction' is on 'The Origin of the Fairy Family'. Then is divided into 5 Sections = 'Fairies of the woods and groves'; 'Fairies of the fields and meadows'; 'Fairies of the hills and caves'; Fairies of the hearths and homesteads'; and 'Fairies of the Seas and Rivers'. The book was put together by the Oxford educator Archibald MacLaren, (1820-1884) , who was a gymnast, author, and expert on fairies, fairy lore, etc. At his gymnasium in North Oxford Burne-Jones and William Morris used, as students, to practice swordplay and boxing! Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, 1st Baronet, ARA. (1833-1898) was an English painter and designer associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood's style and subject matter. Burne-Jones worked with William Morris as a founding partner in Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co in the design of decorative arts. His early paintings show the influence of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, but by 1870 he had developed his own style. Overall a very attractive, relatively clean and tight copy. Scarce. See Images. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
