Deze portfolio-uitgave biedt een kennismaking met de traditionele kunst van Congo zoals bewaard en gepresenteerd in het Museum van Belgisch-Kongo (Tervuren). In het begelei…dende tekstgedeelte bespreekt Albert Maesen de artistieke tradities, culturele achtergronden en symbolische betekenis van de afgebeelde voorwerpen. Daarbij wordt aandacht besteed aan de grote verscheidenheid van stijlen en kunstvormen die binnen de verschillende volkeren en regio's van Congo zijn ontstaan. De vijftig losse kleurenplaten reproduceren een selectie van maskers, beelden, rituele objecten, ceremoniële voorwerpen en andere kunstwerken uit de museumcollecties. Samen vormen zij een representatief overzicht van de rijkdom en de esthetische kwaliteit van de Congolese kunst, zoals die aan het einde van de koloniale periode werd gepresenteerd aan een Europees publiek. Het invloedrijke kunstboek en portfolio Umbangu: Kunst uit Kongo in het Museum van Belgisch-Kongo verscheen in 1960 vlak voor de Congolese onafhankelijkheid en geldt nog altijd als een historisch referentiewerk voor Centraal-Afrikaanse kunst. De publicatie werd voor het museum in Tervuren samengesteld door de vooraanstaande Belgische etnograaf Albert Maesen en uitgegeven als een luxe, losbladig album binnen de prestigieuze reeks 'Kunst in België'. In plaats van een traditionele doorlopende tekst, bestaat de kern van dit monumentale werk uit een map met vijftig hoogwaardige, losse kleurplaten van de absolute topstukken uit de museumcollectie. Elk van deze meesterwerken wordt in een begeleidend katern door Maesen voorzien van diepgaand, wetenschappelijk commentaar, waarbij de diepere taalkundige betekenis van het woord umbangu - meesterlijke vaardigheid en spiritueel vakmanschap - naadloos aansluit bij de getoonde esthetiek. Inhoudelijk biedt het album een representatieve blauwdruk van de klassieke Congolese houtsnijkunst, afkomstig van meer dan dertig verschillende culturele gemeenschappen zoals de Kuba, Luba en Kongo. De geselecteerde objecten vallen uiteen in iconische ceremoniële maskers, verfijnde voorouder- en krachtsculpturen zoals de bekende minkisi, en rijkelijk gedecoreerde prestige-objecten van de koninklijke elite. Hoewel het werk destijds inspeelde op de westerse bewondering voor de esthetische vormgeving van deze objecten, koos Maesen resoluut voor een strikt etnografische benadering. Hij analyseerde de voorwerpen niet als passieve, autonome kunst, maar als actieve en functionele dragers van sociale orde, kosmologische kennis en politieke macht binnen hun oorspronkelijke Afrikaanse context.
