A near fine clean copy of the 1st edition issued by The Merlin Press with illustrations by John Edward Craig and in a good to very good dust jacket. One of Gogol's best known works, first published in Russian in 1842. In the original pale blue cloth binding with gilt titles to the front board. The binding is very clean. The spine and edges are slightly faded and top corners have light rubbing. Internally there is the pencil signature of Peter Ford, the editor and writer, to the front free endpaper. The contents, with 6 coloured plates and initial capitals are complete and clean. The dust jacket is complete and priced at 5/- on the front flap. It is in a removable protective wrap. There is light edge nibbling, particularly across the top edge, with slight loss at the folds and spine ends, and some small edge tears. The top edge is browned and this is visible at the flaps.There is a pale mark on the front panel and a tiny spot and a scuff on the back panel.
