It is also a story about what happened in the spring of 1940 in Eastern Europe, in the lands occupied by the Soviet Union: on Stalin's orders, the Soviet secret police NKVD murdered 21,768 Poles. The Bykivnia graves on the outskirts of Kiev, Ukraine became the resting place for more than 1980 Polish soldiers, all part of the so-called Ukrainian Katyn list comprising the total of 3435 victims. The quest for the truth continues to go on as not all of the burial places have been discovered yet, despite the considerable lapse of time. -- The photo essay "Bykownia: Archeology of Crime" won the first prize in the Grand Press Photo contest in Poland.
