Edgar Degas was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker who was prominent in the Impressionist group and widely celebrated for his images of Parisian life. Degas's principal subject was the human, especially the female figure, which he explored in works ranging from the somber portraits of his early years to the studies of laundresses, cabaret singers, milliners, and prostitutes of his Impressionist period. Ballet dancers and women at their toilette would preoccupy him throughout his career. Degas was the only Impressionist to truly bridge the gap between traditional academic art and the radical movements of the early 20th century, a restless innovator who often set the pace for his younger colleagues. Acknowledged as one of the finest draftsmen of his age, Degas experimented with a wide variety of media, including oil, pastel, gouache, etching, lithography, monotype, wax modeling, and photography. This is an oversized or heavy book, which requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US.

Pastel, used sporadically in the 1860s and with increasing frequency in the 1870s, had by the 1880s become his preferred medium. Today, Degas' pastels are distinguished not only for their sheer quantity (he created over 700), but for the evidence they provide of his critical role as a catalyst of modernism. Pastel, the ambivalent medium par excellence, half pencil, half brush, suited Degas' métier as reporter of human behaviour and as recreator of nature. Whether at the ballet, the café concert, the racetrack, or in a woman's dressing room, Degas transformed scenes of public and private life in Paris into meditations on the character of his subjects. As he abandoned allusions to specific places, concentrating almost exclusively on scenes based on the bath, he grew increasingly fascinated by the pure properties of line, shape and colour, and the magical reinvention of space through their metamorphoses. Degas' formal revolutions coincided with unparalleled technical developments. Used in combination with distemper, over monotype, intaglio prints, or transfer lithographs, and with intermittent layers of fixative, pastel evolved into the ideal vehicle for Degas' complex artistic temperament. Never before had works in the medium achieved this degree of visual complexity, chromatic intensity and brilliance. In her introductory essay, Jean Sutherland Boggs explores the art-historical context of Degas' work, particularly the achievements in pastel of other nineteenth-century artists. Anne Maheux describes the working methods and materials that Degas employed, focusing on his innovative techniques. An album of seventy reproductions of pastels from collections worldwide - many never previously published -presents a complete pictorial history of Degas' work in the medium; each plate accompanied by complete catalogue data and extensive commentaries. This seminal study not only transforms our view of one of the great artists of Impressionism, but also presents fresh evidence of how that tradition grew into the art we know today."
