Inscription from Commodore George Smith Blake (1803-1871). Blake has signed some of the title pages. Commodore Blake was Superintendent of the United States Naval Academy from 1857 to 1865. Blake was an antiquarian and Massachusetts native. He donated these books to the Brookline (MA) public Library in 1871. A gift inscription to Blake in the 1867 volume states, "Compliments of the Secretary of the Navy.".

Aggiungi al carrelloUnbound. Condizione: Very good. This free-franked stampless letter signed by Senator Mahlon Dickerson measures 15.5" x 9.75" unfolded. It is datelined "Washington 12th Feby. 1829" and was sent to James Parker, the Collector of the Port of New Jersey at Perth Amboy. It bears a circular Washington City postmark dated the same day.… In nice shape. The letter reads in part: "The Legislature of New Jersey are about to pass if they have not already passed an act for making the Delaware & Raritan Canal to be suspended . . . until Congress shall subscribe 500,000 Dols for that purpose. . . I wrote to the Governor the passage of this bill might be considered as an indefinite postponement of the whole concern. It will be years before we can obtain a subscription to the amount under current circumstances. . . "I will use my utmost endeavors to accomplish the wish of the Legislature on this subject - but I consider the passage of the bill as reported a serious misfortune to the state. . ." . The intended purpose of the canal was to provide expedited shipping through New Jersey between New York City and Philadelphia, specifically for the transportation of eastern Pennsylvania anthracite coal. Many miles and hundreds of hours would be cut from the existing route from the Pennsylvania coal region down the Delaware, around Cape May, and up the occasionally treacherous Atlantic Ocean coast to New York City. The route was strongly opposed by politically powerful riverbank property owners, especially those who owned mills, who feared increased river traffic would impede their livelihood. Surprisingly, after years of opposition, the legislature granted a charter to the canal a year later; however, most of its funding was required to come from private sources. Just when it appeared all private sources had dried up, Robert F. Stockton pledged his immense family fortune as collateral and work began in earnest. The canal was almost entirely dug by Irish immigrants using hand tools. It wasn't completed in 1834, at a cost of nearly $3 million (about $90 million in today's dollars). Its heaviest use occurred between 1850 and 1870 when Pennsylvania coal fueled America's industrial revolution. [For more information, see "The Delaware & Raritan Canal: The Past, The Present and the Promise" at The College of New Jersey website.] A unique firsthand account of some of the politics related to the building of the canal, made all the more interesting by the senatorial autograph of Mahlon Dickerson who also served as a New Jersey Governor, the Secretary of the Navy, and a United States District Court Judge. At the time of listing, nothing similar is for sale in the trade, the Rare Book Hub shows nothing similar has appeared at auction, and OCLC shows no records of similar institutional holdings. .

Mahlon Dickerson (1770-1853) was an influential early American statesman, jurist, and naval administrator who served in nearly every major branch of government during the early republic. Educated at Princeton University (then the College of New Jersey), Dickerson practiced law before rising through New Jersey and Pennsylvania politics, eventually becoming the seventh governor of New Jersey from 1815 to 1817 and later serving for sixteen years as a United States senator. He was appointed the 10th U.S. Secretary of the Navy under Presidents Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren, overseeing naval affairs during a formative period of American expansion and modernization. Dickerson also served briefly as a federal judge and was known for his close association with Jacksonian Democratic politics. Beyond public office, he managed iron mining interests in New Jersey and became one of the state's most prominent nineteenth-century political figures, with his legacy preserved through places and naval vessels named in his honor. 1412264. A chronicle of the short-lived Bank of the United States and its continued involvement in US Navy pensions. After the demise of the Second Bank of the United States in 1836, a result of the historical "Bank War" between US President Andrew Jackson and Ba…nk President Nicholas Biddle, Biddle attempted to resuscitate the institution as a commercial bank chartered by the State of Pennsylvania. The former bank's stock holders (except the US government) voted to transfer the old bank's assets and liabilities to the new bank, which made it difficult to disentangle the dealings of the defunct bank with the newly state-chartered bank. This letter, from Secretary of the Navy, Mahlon Dickerson, discusses arrangements for The Bank of the United States to fund Navy Pensions and is an example of it's continued involvement with the US Government after the Second Bank of the United States charter had expired. Reading in part: "I have received your letter of the 19th inst. and agree to the arrangement you propose, that for the funds you may place at the disposal of this department for the payment of Navy Pensions, credit shall be given on the Bond from the Bank of the United States chartered by the Legislature of Pennsylvania to the United States." Written at the onset of the Panic of 1837, Biddle would fail to replicate the success he experienced as President of the Second Bank of the United States, and resigned as President in 1839. The Bank of the Unites States failed in 1841. Biddle faced financial ruin and was arrested for fraud but was acquitted before his death in 1844. Born in Hanover Township, New Jersey, Mahlon Dickerson (1770-1853) was a cavalry veteran of the Whiskey Rebellion, who would go on to be elected Governor of New Jersey, serve as US Senator, receive two appointments as Secretary of the Navy, and be confirmed as a judge for the United States District Court of New Jersey. 1-1/2 pages, pen and ink on paper. I have stated to the Secretary your claims to his attention, and have added that his good offices on this occasion, will be considered by me as a personal obligation after being charmed with the company of Mr. Dallas for the last fortnight, I have been as you may suppose, extremely shocked at hearing of his death my public would not admit of my absence at this time, or I should have gone to Philadelphia to attend his funeral. With constant wishes for the happiness of yourself and your little flock I am very Sincerely your friend and humble Servant, Mahlon Dickerson.'' The Bache s were related to Benjamin Franklin, as his daughter, Sally, married into the Bache family. A nice association of names and a fine letter for the naval historian.
