[From Introduction] Thirty years ago Vose Galleries started a series of exhibitions which we believed were long overdue, focusing on the work of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century artists, particularly the painters of the Boston school. It is with great pleasure that we reintroduce to our collectors one of the last of that generation of painters, Ernest Lee Major. Major was a wonderful artist. He painted a wide range of subjects and worked in a variety of media. Still life, figure pieces, and landscapes all were of interest to Major. Today he is best remembered for his teaching, and for his role in perpetuating the Boston school style of painting. Major taught for forty-six years at the Massachusetts Normal Art School. There, in one of his evening classes he met Alfred Di Cesare, a talented painter who worked as his studio assistant for ten years. The two men remained close friends until Major's death in 1950. In 1951 Vose Galleries had the honor of presenting a memorial exhibition of the works of Ernest Lee Major. An important group of paintings in that show was bought by Alfred Di Cesare, and remained in his private collection until his death in 1993. Last fall, Argena Di Cesare, widow of the artist, approached Vose Galleries about holding a joint exhibition with works by her late husband, Ernest Lee Major and his student, Alfred Di Cesare. We invite you to view this selection of over fifty paintings by two of Boston's finest artists, knowing you will share our enthusiasm once you see them.
