JEFFERSON…DAVIS, Secretary of War. WASHINGTON: George W. Bowman, Printer, 1860. [published date: 1860]. Rare First Edition. Thick Folio. 12.0" x 9.5" inches. (LxB). Pp. xvi, 287 pages + 39 large folding maps + 25 Folding plates, mostly lithograph views of fortifications, etc. + 8 single page line drawings of canon & numerous in-text illustrations. In a fine modern 1/2 black morocco leather binding over marbled boards, gilt ruled & decorated spine with contrast red & green gilt lettered morocco labels. Delafield's extensive report on the state of armament at the close of the Crimean War in 1854. It was the most comprehensive work on modern military technology at the beginning of the civil war and was important in the reorganization of the Union Army. He was a military engineer, superintendent of West Point and eventually head of the Army Corps of Engineers. The work is valued for its scientific accuracy and for its artistic renderings. In 1855 Major Delafield of the American Corps of Engineers was appointed to form a commission to visit the Crimea and the theatre of war in Europe for the purpose of gathering information regarding various aspects of their military systems: the organization of armies, furnishing and distributing supplies, medical and hospital arrangements, kinds of arms, ammuniition and equipment , including the Lancaster gun and rifle cannon, the construction of fortifications, methods of transportation, &c. The plates include numerous lithographed views of Sebastopol and fortifications there, the military hospital at St. Petersburg, the Turkish Barrack at Scutari, used by the English Army as their general depot hospital, folding plans of fortifcations in Paris, Cherbourg, Sebastopol, Constadt, and other cities, and plates showing weapons, hospitals, batteries, storehouses, military structures. The Delafield Commission was the most ambitious military observation mission up to that time, and the first to observe an ongoing war. This undertaking constituted an important step in the development of U.S. military. A classic work. A rare book in a fine modern 1/2 black morocco leather binding over marbled boards, pages-plates with some age toning/foxing are generally clean & bright, minor stains to blank outer margin of the first 10 pages, the binding is tight & intact. This large book (11 3/4" x 10" x 2 3/4" thick) weighs 6.1 pounds and will require extra postage. It is very rare to find all plates in such wonderful intact and in such great condition.

First edition of this detailed and influential report on the Crimean War, and the state of European fortifications and armaments during the conflict. The Crimean War was intently watched in the future Confederate states, with southern newspapers and supporters sympathizing with the Russians. The European Military Commission dispatched by Secretary of War Jefferson Davis included future Union generals such as George B. McClellan and Major Alfred Mordecai. Delafield covered all aspects of the developments during the Crimean War, including the tactical impact of rifled muskets, field fortifications, improved saddles, hospital wagons, and medical tents, as well as detailing Russian sea mines, and the Anglo-French ironclads used at Kinburn. This work published on the eve of the Civil War offered an invaluable handbook for both Northern and Southern commanders, as well as cautionary observations.
