Im ersten Augenblick ist es die Stille, der man sich vor Makarovs Bildern überrascht, fast schockiert gegenübersieht. Aus der schrillen Geräuschkulisse hastender Zeit kommend ist Distanz zunächst vorhanden. Doch das Erlebnis wächst, der Abstand wird geringer, in dem sich rezeptive Wahrnehmung sen-sibilisiert. Mit der erweiterten Kenntnis Makarovscher Werke kann sich Bewußtsein für Atmosphärisches entwickeln. Und, wer bereit ist, sich der geheimnisvollen Aura von Bildern zu bemächtigen, der wird hier der erfahrbaren Faszination des Kontemplativen begegnen. Das Oeuvre des 1952 in Moskau geborenen und seit Mitte der siebziger Jahre in Berlin (DDR) lebenden Nikolai Makarov ist heute bereits beachtlich. Früh schon faszinieren Makarov die alten europäischen Meister. Die Frage nach der dabei eventuell wichtigsten Kunstrichtung ist jedoch nicht relevant. Nur der Hintergrund dieser Erfahrung ist interessant. Von Bedeutung freilich ist für ihn die handwerkliche, die technische Meisterschaft, die so wesentlich das Hervorbringen von Kunstwerken beeinflußen kann. Hier ist eine grundsätzliche Voraussetzung gefunden, die zur persönlichen Überzeugung Makarovscher Kunstproduktion gehört. Das Spiel mit der Perfektion reizt. Es gelingt, da es nicht ausgespielt, nicht überreizt wird. Manier bleibt ausgeschlossen. Vielmehr konstituiert sich das bisherige Gesamtwerk gerade aus dem einheitlichen Fluß der Gestaltung. Auch die Wahl unterschiedlichster Themen führt die einheitliche Handschrift überzeugend zu einem Ganzen. Vor allem die Tafelmalerei und die Zeichnung formieren ein geschlossenes Bild. Was dominiert sind die leisen Klänge, sind die Adagios dieser Malerei. Ihnen zu folgen, bleibt, in der vorliegenden Spannweite Makarovscher Arbeiten, ein stets erneutes nachhaltiges Erlebnis. Allein - es sind nicht der gedämpfte Klang, die zurückhaltende Sprache dieser Bilder, aus denen ihre Ausstrahlungskraft erwächst. Der Ausgangspunkt bildsprachlicher Wirkung findet sich vor allem in jenen von der Wirklichkeit des Tages abgezogenen und aus tiefen künstlerischen Sphären heraufdringenden Impulsen. Dies klingt nach Umwegen der Erfahrung. In jedem Fall verweist es auf die aus solchen Impulsen erwachsende eigenständige Mentalität Makarovscher Realitätsbewältigung.
