This striking and handsome two-volume matching set of Mallory's Le Morte D' Arthur presents beautifully - an eye-catching and splendid pair in a charming signed binding by Bickers & Son, Leicester, England. Quite rare indeed, especially in this superb preservation. Published in London by Macmillan originally in 1900, these two volumes are from 1908. Stunning in their antiquarian red half-leather bindings, with five raised bands to each of the spines and gilt designs. Blue marbled endpapers and gilt top edges to both, red ribbon page markers, bound in. The books were issued by the publisher as part of their "Library of English Classics" series, and include the bibliographical note by A.W. Pollard, original Preface by William Caxton, and a glossary and index. Externally, the boards have aged remarkably well and display light indications of age-related storage wear to their spine extremities and bottom board edges. Presenting as clean and attractive. Internally, in unusually clean and unmarked condition, printed on very good quality paper that has not succumbed to foxing. Indeed, the rough cut pages are amazingly clean throughout. Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. The first edition with these illustrations. Small 8vo. 68pp. Red leather with gilt lettering and a blind-stamped border to the upper board. With a title page decoration, printed in red, a half-title vignette and two full-page engravings (other copies appear to include a total of five engravings, but this one only includes four, although the two full-page plates are present, as required). The text printed in red and black, and following exactly that printed by William Caxton in 1845, with the misprints not corrected. A touch of wear to the extremities of the leather. Former owner name and date neatly inked in red to the front free endpaper. Very good indeed. Laid-in is an Eric Gill-designed bookplate, created in 1915 for Joseph Thorp's Decoy Press. The colophon states that 200 copies were printed, but in fact the book was never published, Rene Hague being dissatisfied with the quality of the printing; however some sets of sheets were given away if they deemed satisfactory, in all perhaps twenty to twenty-five sets, none of which were bound at the press.…
