Original Hardcover / Green publisher's cloth with gilt lettering and ornament…. Excellent condition. With a beautiful inscription in ink by John George MacCarthy on the halftitle: "Presented to Nicholas Murphy Esq. with the writers best wishes and regards - January 7, 1876". Includes: Henry Grattan's Early Life - 1746 to 1775 / Henry Grattan's Struggle for Commercial Freedom and National Independence [1775 to 1782] / Henry Grattan's Struggle for Catholic Emancipation and Parliamentary Reform [1782 to 1797] / Henry Grattan's Struggle against the Union [1800] / Henry Grattan's Last Years and Death [1800 to 1820]. The author mentions in the front of the book: "The following pages have been published at the suggestion of some members of the Grattan Monument Committee, in the hpe of promoting and popularizing knowledge of the subject - River View, Cork, January 1, 1876" John George MacCarthy (18291892) was an Irish Home Rule League politician. He first stood for election for Mallow at a by-election in 1872, but was unsuccessful. He was then elected for the seat at the next general election in 1874. (Wikipedia).
