The Oval Portrait, initially titled Life in Death, is a revised and shorter version that was published in the Broadway Journal in 1845.Although being one of his shortest stories, Poe is able to establish in The Oval Portrait a haunting atmosphere of terror. The fate of the beautiful, young woman fascinates the narrator who is entirely taken by the enigmatic painting and the inscrutable circumstances of the lady's death. It is in this way that the author is able to create simultaneously a sense of both mystery and tragedy, and this essay will examine in greater detail howthese two elements are combined in order to make up the Gothic mood typical for Poe's writings.Firstly, I will have a look at the author and his background before providing some general information about this short story. In this case, a biographical approach to The Oval Portrait is very enriching and is able to shed light on some aspects, as we will see later on. Secondly, I will concentrate on the appearance of the mysterious atmosphere in the work, such as the narrator's equivocal reliability, the mansion and its relation to the Gothic, the role of light and darkness, and the open questions. My third point of analysis will be the tragic: how is Poe able tomake both the story's narrator and his readers be captivated by such a sad woman's death withinless than four pages To begin with, I will focus on the painter and his obsession with his art, aswell as the dilemma whether the latter is inevitably irreconcilable with life. It is the aim of this essay to examine how exactly Lang tried to present his fears and speculations to the spectators in order to initiate them in the set of problems depicted in the film. The first thing we see is that in the mega- city Metropolis are living two different classes of society, and the lives of the people could not be more discrete: First of all, the workers in the underground and their depressing living quarters are shown. Everyone is dressed in grey, dark colours prevail and create a melancholy, sad atmosphere. Theuncomfortable environment is dull and suffocating. The men move in a way that resembles a convict's last march to the scaffold, with the music always emphasizing the mood of a scene. They all look to the ground and seem to be tired and hopeless, almost resembling a mass of prisoners. No individuals can be figured out because there is an absolute uniformity and anonymity. Like slaves, they are treated as inferior people having to obey their ruthless masterswho force them to live and work under miserable conditions.In contrast to this claustrophobic subterranean world, the great city is shown with its numerous skyscrapers and impressive architecture. The carefree ruling class enjoys their live to the full and the sun shines brightly. We see young men doing sports in the open, embodying the direct opposite of the workers previously shown.

However, he does not just recount facts in anemotionally detached way; and it is the aim of this term paper to analyze the confounding ofthe adult and the child speaker, that is, the former being entirely plunged in his memoriessurrounding him 'like a fragrance', he seems to actually be the child he was, reliving somescenes again.First of all, after having given some information about the text version of Thomas' work, I willintroduce Gérard Genette's theory of narratology, and mainly focus on the distinction betweennarration and focalization. This subtle difference, as well as other terminology referring to thequestion of perspective, is very enriching, as it permits to localize the narrator's point of viewand involvement, to understand the story's organization, and eventually, to reflect on the howand why of the blurring of boundaries between the adult speaker of the here and now (at themoment of speaking), and the child speaker experiencing the events. I will argue that thosetwo are intertwined, with several gradations more or less explicit in text and film.Next, the way of narrating, the style, and linguistic issues will be examined, in order toattribute certain expressions or sentence structures either rather to the adult, or to the child. Ofcourse it is not always possible to draw a clear-cut line, but nevertheless, there are passageswhich I believe to be revealing when arguing in favor of a perspective. It is crucial not toforget that the latter does not stay static, but that we can detect shifts of position throughout thestory. The author's main source was R. Holinshed'sChronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1587, to which he also added some aspects while changing or leaving out others. Shakespeare focuses on the conflict between Richard and Bolingbroke who conspires against the king and finally becomes King Henry IV. From the very beginning, we can find speeches, situations, and images hinting at something horrible that willhappen. It is the aim of this term paper to examine them in greater detail in order to show how the dark atmosphere is created and why the protagonist King Richard II fails to recognize all warnings from people in his surroundings.First, I will talk about the functions and effects which subtle warnings throughout a play can have. In my opinion, they are important features, so I agree with Wolfgang H. Clemen who also thinks that '[i]t is strange that the role of anticipation and foreboding in Shakespearian [sic] drama has so far not received adequate attention and treatment' (25). Next, I am going to show act by act what is revealing of the king's cruel fate. De plus, il s'agit du mystère qui a mis le feu au Park et pour quelles raisons. Pierrot peut enfin devenir l'héritier d'Arthème Mounnezergues et le gardien de la chapelle poldève. Mais à part les intrigues du protagoniste et ses amis, la chose qui se fait remarquer le plus, c'est le , style de la langue utilisé lequel a mené aux nombreuses discussions parmi les lecteurs. Toutefois, pour cet écrivain exceptionnel, la langue parlée écrite s'est trop éloignée du français qui vient véritablement parlé des gens. Ainsi, comme le français littéraire n'arrive plus à satisfaire le besoin d'expressivité, Queneau emploie un , enrichissant et réformant l'orthographe, le vocabulaire et la syntaxe.

Grâce à la forme épistolaire sous laquelle le roman se présente, l'auteur peut confronter ses lecteurs à une variété de voix et à des réflexions intérieures. De plus, en examinant les émotions qui se manifestent enfin dans les lettres, on peut remarquer une incertitude, voire une ambiguïté concernant la compréhension des réactions corporelles face à un événement, un geste ou une impression. Cet essai a pour but de comparer les extraits des lettres de Claire, Julie et Saint-Preux, aussi bien que de pointer où le corps apparaît comme moyen de s'exprimer et se situer au monde.D'abord, je regarderai de près les lettres envoyées de Saint-Preux à Julie ; le langage, les images ainsi que l'impact des causes extérieures sur l'intérieur, c'est-à-dire de Julie aux sentiments de Saint-Preux, par exemple, seront pris en considération.Puis, à l'instar des lettres de Julie, j'aborderai, entre autres, la question de la position puissante de cette dernière en rapport avec une dépendance de la part de son amant.Ensuite, la lettre de Claire donnera matière à revenir sur le pouvoir que l'amour exerce et qui est même capable de déclencher de vives réactions du corps.Finalement, il y aura une conclusion de mon travail sur les extraits, et l'indication des sources consultées.

De ce fait, il est en partie autobiographique; et même s'il ne faut jamais identifier a priori le narrateur d'un livre avec l'auteur, nous considérons utile de nommer quelques étapes de sa vie parce que Vittorini «non si può capire senza la sua famiglia, la sua Siracusa, [.], senza le stazioncine sperdute nel vasto teatro dell'infelicità sociale della Sicilia»2.Né en 1908 à Syracuse, il grandit en traversant la Sicile en raison du travail de son père. Après plusieurs déplacements et de tentatives d'évasion, il s'installa à Milan, se détourna du fascisme, travailla comme traducteur et créa les revues Il Politecnico et Il Menabò. Il mourut à Milan en 1966. Vittorini peut être considéré comme le fondateur d'un nouveau réalisme. Le roman, divisé en cinq parties, se compose de quarante-neuf chapitres, un épilogue et une note finale. Vittorini commença la rédaction en 1937 ; ''son'' livre3 parut sous le titre Nome e lagrime en 1941. Le protagoniste Silvestro Ferrauto reçoit une lettre de son père qui lui apprend qu'il a quitté sa femme pour une autre avec laquelle il vit désormais à Venise, ce pour quoi il lui demande de rendre visite à la mère, Concezione, à l'occasion de sa fête le huit décembre. Silvestro part et rencontre nombre de gens qui ont un effet particulier sur lui, l'incitant toujours à continuer son voyage. Il arrive chez sa mère, mange avec elle en discutant, et l'accompagne à son tour dans le village, pendant lequel elle fait des injections aux habitants afin de lutter contre les maladies. Il fait la connaissance de trois Siciliens avec qui il se rend dans un bar. Ensuite, il parle à un soldat qui se révèle être son frère Liborio avant de disparaître soudainement. Silvestro se met à pleurer, toutes les personnes rencontrées pendant son voyage l'entourent, et finalement, avant de repartir, il voit la mère en train de laver les pieds d'un homme qui est probablement son père.

C'était un personnage controversé, exceptionnel à tous les égards, et aux activités multiples : cinéaste, écrivain, journaliste et poète sont les métiers parmi les plus cités. Cependant, son oeuvre picturale n'est guère mentionnée. À l'exemple du poème «Quadri friulani» du recueil Le Ceneri di Gramsci, nous allons nous interroger sur le lien entre langue, paysage et peinture. Comme le suggère la citation du philosophe et écrivain Frantz Fanon, l'apprentissage d'une langue - dans le cas de Pasolini, il s'agit bel et bien d'un apprentissage, et non d'une acquisition du frioulan - ne peut s'opérer que lorsque le sujet accepte qu'elle va de pair avec une histoire et une vision du monde. Le langage qui suppose une communauté est un moyen d'expression d'une antériorité et en même temps une expérience dans le présent.Ce recueil, publié chez Garzanti en 1957, se compose de onze poèmes tous déjà publiés ailleurs auparavant. «Quadri friulani» précède le poème qui donne le nom à l'oeuvre écrite presque entièrement en tercets que l'on peut retracer jusqu'à la Divina Commedia de Dante. Le poème respecte aussi le mètre narratif de la terzina incatenata de manière plus ou moins rigoureuse et souvent, des rimes imparfaites ou des assonances à l'intérieur du vers structurent les strophes dont on pourrait citer la quatrième («Sordido fango indurito, pesto, e rasento / tuguri recenti e decrepiti, ai limiti / di calde aree erbose»; le jeu sur les sons [o], [i] et [e] respectivement créent un effet unique sur le plan rythmique). Comme postulé dans la revue Officina, Pasolini souhaitait ne pas rejeter la tradition, mais l'innover, et faire de la poésie une action, se positionner contre l'hermétisme et contre la néo-avant-garde. Les vers sont parfaitement adaptés au caractère discursif des poemetti où l'unité syntaxique n'est pas moins importante que l'unité métrique, ce qui leur confère une fluidité, donnant au lecteur l'impression non seulement de voir, mais de sentir les ondes de la narration qui symbolisent la pensée du je lyrique qui se développe. Le Ceneri di Gramsci a connu un énorme succès et est considéré le chef-d'oeuvre de Pasolini grâce auquel il est devenu célèbre. C'est un recueil fondamental pour comprendre la crise idéologique de l'auteur.

Mon essai a pour but d'analyser comment le thème du masque et de la mascarade estabordé, de montrer les raisons et effets du port d'un masque, ainsi que de suivre de près le parcoursde recherche d'une identité propre des personnages principaux.Dans un premier temps, j'expliquerai le rôle du masque dans le théâtre classique, et lesconséquences de l'abandon de ce premier avec le théâtre de Carlo Goldoni. Je parlerai de lasignification de la mascarade avant de passer à l'histoire du concept du masque dans la société, quiest important pour décrire le comportement de nombre de personnages dans The Invisible ManHouse Made of Dawn et Benang.Dans un deuxième temps, je présenterai les personnages auxquels le concept de masque etmascarade s'applique ; et on verra qu'il y en a quelques-uns qui imposent un masque aux autresainsi que des personnages qui les acceptent ou doivent les accepter. Tout au long de ce travail, jecréerai des liens entre les romans en tenant compte des points communs et des différences en ce quiconcerne la question de la (non-)acceptation, du faire semblant, et de jouer un rôle. En outre, jeprendrai en considération les textes et enjeux étudiés pendant le cours.Finalement, il y aura une conclusion, et j'indiquerai les sources que j'ai pu consulter.
