Unter IT-Projekten sind dabei allerdings Software-Projekte im Speziellen zu verstehen. Im ersten Kapitel vermitteln die beiden Autoren zuerst die Problematik rund um das Abschätzen von Aufwänden. Sie führen in die Notwendigkeit, die Prinzipien und verschiedene Regeln ein. Derart gerüstet werden im zweiten Kapitel die Grundlagen näher beschrieben. Dabei behandeln Bundschuh und Fabry nicht nur die technischen Aspekte, sondern auch die zu erwartenden Widerstände im Team. Das dritte Kapitel behandelt dann die verschiedenen Methoden rund um die Aufwandschätzung. Hierbei werden diese Methoden auch vergleichend gegenübergestellt, damit der Leser die im weiteren Buch behandelten Verfahren besser beurteilen kann. Ein Aspekt der Schätzung sind Software-Metriken, die im vierten Kapitel vorgestellt werden. Die Autoren stellen hier auch verschiedene Organisationen vor, die sich mit Software-Metriken befassen. Dank der mitgelieferten URLs kann sich der Leser hier weitere Informationen besorgen. Nach dem Benchmarking von Projekten gehen Bundschuh und Fabry im sechsten Kapitel auf die verbreitetste Methode ein -- der Function-Point-Methode. Neben den Grundlagen werden im weiteren Verlauf die Zählregeln sowie zwei Fallbeispiele rund um die Methode vorgestellt. Dies geschieht sehr ausführlich, da die Anwendung der FP-Methode ohne das Wissen um die Zählregeln keinen Sinn macht. Ohne entsprechende Tools wird die Schätzung großer Projekte schnell scheitern. Daher runden die beiden Autoren ihr Buch mit einer Vorstellung mehrerer Werkzeuge sowie einiger Checklisten ab. Zusammen mit den URLs und Literaturhinweisen zum Thema gelingt ihnen so eine wirklich umfassende Einführung in dieses komplexe und wichtige Thema. Einziger Wermutstropfen ist der etwas unruhige Satz mit vielen kurzen Absätzen und Schriftwechseln. So wird das Lesen leider unnötig erschwert. Der Verlag sollte dies in der zweiten Auflage überarbeiten. Nur wer Aufwand, Zeit, Kosten und Qualität seiner IT-Projekte auf Basis einer fundierten Aufwandschätzung von Anfang an solide plant, kann sie erfolgreich ins Ziel steuern. Wer die IT-Managementaufgabe »Aufwandschätzung« nicht wahrnimmt, riskiert leichtfertig das Scheitern seiner IT-Projekte. Das heißt teures Lehrgeld zahlen; denn ein einziges abgebrochenes Projekt kommt teurer als die Einführung einer professionellen Aufwandschätzung, die oft wegen Zeitknappheit und angeblich zu hohem Aufwand sträflich vernachlässigt werden.
