Molecular phylogenetic relationships among 45 members of the Helicoidea (Gastropoda: Stylommatophora) were examined using partial mitochondrial 16S rRNA sequences. Phylogenetic relationships were inferred using maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods. The reconstructed phylogenies showed a good degree of support for more recent branches, but gave little support to deeper nodes. Mitochondrial rDNA data further confirmed monophyletic status of helicids, recognized monachine hygromiid and bradybaenid clades and resolved a number of relationships in the helicelline hygromiids. With the respect to the latter assemblage, most of the anatomically based groups are confirmed, corroborating the diagnostic value of the dart-sac complex and a close affinity between Ichnusomunda sacchii and species of the genus Cernuella. Nevertheless, some well resolved branches challenge previous systematic arrangements, grouping species previously placed in different arrangements. In particular, support was not found for the monophyly of helicelline hygromiids with pedal penial innervation. Possible explanations for these incongruencies are suggested. 16S sequence data are appropriate for studies of relationships within the different species groups and less so for recovery of more ancient radiations in the Helicoidea. It will be valuable to combine the 16S data with other gene sequences to estimate basal relationships. 12 pp., 3 figs, 4.

Anatomical study of specimens of the type species of Avenionia, Avenionia vayssieri Nicolas, 1882 (junior synonym of Paulia berenguieri Bourguignat, 1882, currently A. brevis berenguieri), from southern France, revealed characters different from those known in the available literature and prompted the redefinition of Avenionia. The other Avenionia species from France and nearby countries of central-western Europe are tentatively left in this genus, whereas taxa from Italy which were included in Avenionia on formerly available evidence will be to be assigned to another genus. 12 pp., 27 figs, gr. 8.

Morphological data shows that O. paulucciae (De Stefani, 1883) belongs to Oxychilus (s. str.), sensu Giusti & Manganelli (1999), and is distinguished from sympatric, similarly shelled species, such as O. draparnaudi (Beck, 1837) and O. meridionalis (Paulucci, 1881), by its larger shell (diameter: 13.9-17.4 mm), smaller umbilicus (about 1/8 of shell diameter), narrow mid-penial region, internal ornamentation of proximal penis consisting of longitudinal pleats, and a less developed vaginal gland, often forming an incomplete ring around proximal vagina. DNA sequence data, analysing the ITS-1 region in two specimens of O. paulucciae and representatives of several other species occurring in Tuscany, O. draparnaudi, O. majori (Paulucci, 1886), O. meridionalis, O. pilula (Paulucci, 1886) and O. uzielli (Issel, 1873), indicates that O. paulucciae represents a well-differentiated evolutionary lineage and suggests it has close relationships with O. meridionalis and O. uziellii. Finally, analysis of morphological characters and DNA sequencing data demonstrates that Oxychilus lanzai Forcart, 1967, is a junior synonym of O. paulucciae. 17 pp., 15 figs, gr. 8.

The taxonomic and nomenclatural status of Oxychilus adamii (Westerlund, 1886) and O. polygyra (Pollonera, 1885) is revised. These two, very similar species are tentatively assigned to Mediterranean a 'subgenus' of Oxychilus characterized by (1) absent or very short flagellum; (2) penial retractor inserted where epiphallus ends and proximal penis begins; (3) internal ornamentation of penis consisting of pleats and rows of papillae, some of which or all with apical thorn; (4) short epiphallus internally with series of transverse crests on one side and a few slender longitudinal pleats on the other; (5) mucous gland forming muff of glandular tissue, denser and yellower around distal portion of free oviduct; (6) and short mesocone on the central tooth. O. adamii is distinguished by a medium-sized shell (diameter 16.1 ± 1.0 mm) and very small papillae without apical thorn covering the initial portion of the proximal penis. O. polygyra is distinguished by a small shell (diameter 10.4 ± 0.5 mm) and large papillae with an evident cuticularized apical thorn covering the initial portion of the proximal penis. The paper concludes with a review of the current status of Oxychilus taxonomy, including the main problems and some tentative solutions to be verified in the context of individual revisions. 34 pp., 33 figs, gr. 8.
