Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the intersection of faith, politics, and social change in England during the 19th century, a time of great upheaval and transformation. The author, a keen observer of his time, delves into the complexities of a nation grappling with the legacies of the Reformation,…the French Revolution, and the rise of industrialization. Through a series of poetic reflections, historical anecdotes, and philosophical musings, the author examines the state of the Church of England, its role in society, and the evolving relationship between faith and the state. The book examines the influence of the past on the present, as the author draws parallels between the England of his own day and the grander eras of chivalry, piety, and aristocratic rule. Ultimately, the book serves as a poignant and insightful testament to the enduring power of faith and the vital role it plays in shaping the character of a nation. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

4pp., 12mo. On bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Begins: 'I have a very distinct recollection of the dinner given in the Temple by Mr. Hayward to Louis Blanc, in consequence of a curious episode connected with it which I have often related.' He proceeds to tell the anecdote, which tells how Blanc, 'eager for information… respecting the Constitution of the country which was sheltering him', is enlightened by fellow guests 'in a rather solid way'. 'This bored old Mr. Quintin Dick [(1777-1858), MP for Maldon] who at last said | "Sir, you have heard many explanations of the working of the British Constitution. They are beside the mark. I will tell how it works. At my last election I spoke to my constituents as follows. | "Gentlemen, my opponent is a very poor man, with a large family. I am a rich man, and I thank God that all I care for in this world I cover with this hat!" | I put my hat on my head, and they returned me. | That, Sir, is the practical working of the British Constitution.' Dick's reply leaves Blanc 'completely mystified', while his fellow guests are all 'convulsed with laughter'.

The first, on letterhead of the Slains Castle in Aberdeenshire, and dated October 13th, 1881, is signed by Lord John Manners, 7th Duke of Rutland, then Postmaster-General in Lord Salisbury's administration; the second, on letterhead of the Court of Exch…equer, and dated October 31st, 1881, is signed by Sir Henry Hawkins, 1st Baron Brampton, Judge of the High Court of Justice between 1876 and 1898. Sir Hawkins was known as the Hanging Judge and involved in several high profile cases of the era. Each letter has a short annotation on the lower edge, probably from the previous owner, who presumably was an autograph collector, given the content of the letters. ; Letters.

12-1/2" x 9-3/4" (32 x 25.1 cm). A Rare Late Seventeenth-Century Broadside on the Precedents for Parliamentary Divorce - From the Library of Lawrence Stotter [Broadside]. [Divorce]. Manners, John [1638-1711], Lord Roos. The Case of My Lord Roos. [London: S.n., c. 1690]. 12-1/2" x 9-3/4" (32 x 25.1 cm) broadside, single-column te…xt in two parts, separated by rule, below headline (second part begins "Anno v. Edw. vj."), attractively matted and glazed in a modern frame. 20" x 16-1/4" (50 x 41.4 cm). Moderate toning, a few faint later pencil notes, small tears along horizontal fold, lower left edge excised without loss of text. Very good (not examined out of frame). $3,500. * A rare ephemeral publication setting out two leading precedents for the dissolution of marriage by Act of Parliament on grounds of adultery. The first concerns John Manners (then Lord Roos), whose 1670 divorce established a model combining separation, bastardization of issue, and the right of remarriage. The second recounts the more protracted Tudor proceedings involving William Parr (1547-1552), including the subsequent reversal under Mary I of England. Broadsides of this character functioned as vehicles of legal and political argument, distilling complex precedents into accessible form for circulation in support of pending or anticipated legislation. The present example is plausibly connected with the campaign surrounding the attempted divorce of Henry Howard, whose efforts in the 1690s and again in 1700 generated related printed advocacy. Ephemeral legal printing of this kind is rarely encountered in commerce. This copy formerly in the library of Lawrence Stotter and recently dispersed, now available. OCLC, Library Hub and the ESTC locate 1 copy (British Library). English Short-Title Catalogue R173542. See also Stotter, To Put Asunder: The Laws of Matrimonial Strife 115-117 (this copy). 12-1/2" x 9-3/4" (32 x 25.1 cm). (illustratore).
