Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book is one of the earliest dedicated to describing initiatives and resources for the education and employment of blind and partially sighted people in the United Kingdom. It is a compilation of reports and articles from the mid-Victorian period, at a time when specialised education and charitable care for blind people were still in their infancy. The author intended to inform people about this relatively new field, and to encourage support for the charitable institutions and workshops that provided training, employment, and social care for blind people. The book's reports and essays describe the histories of 53 different institutions and organisations, as well as a number of home-teaching societies and other charities for the blind. It also includes information about the various systems of reading for the blind that were in use at the time, such as Braille, Moon, and Lucas. This book is still valuable today as a snapshot of an important moment in the history of disability provision, and as an indication of the social attitudes and biases of the era in which it was written. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
