This is a fine example of Adam and Charles Black's 1844 Biblical reference map of Greece, Italy, Asia Minor and Lower Egypt in antiquity. The map is divided into two parts: The upper map covers the countries traveled by St. Paul, which include Italy, G…reece and the Balkans and Asia Minor south as far as Arabia and Egypt. The lower map depicts the Sinai Peninsula and Egypt and follows the journeys of the Israelites. It covers Egypt, centered on the Nile River, and extending south as far as Hermopolis. Both maps feature ancient and contemporary place names, i.e. Candia and Crete, for each destination - an invaluable resource or scholars of antiquity. Throughout, the map identifies various cities, towns, rivers, mountain passes and an assortment of additional topographical details with relief shown by hachure. The journeys of St. Paul are depicted on the upper map by variously dotted lines to differentiate from the first to the fifth journey. The lower map also depicts the Journeys of the Israelites from their first arrival at Kadesh and their second and third arrival and departure thereof. It shows the course of the Israelites as they fled out of Egypt, across the Red Sea, and subsequently spent the next forty years wandering in the Sinai before migrating into the Promised Land by crossing the Jordan River just north of the Dead Sea. Included in the map are the isla…nds of Cyprus, Crete, Rhodes and cities such as Antioch, Troy, Constantinople and Smyrna (modern Izmir). The region has been home to countless civilizations throughout history from theancient Paleolithic Era, and some of the earliest known permanent settlements have been found in Anatollia. Empires dating to myriad eras have grown and declined in the region including ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman, to name a few.Following the conquest of Constantinople by Fatih Mehmet in 1453, the Ottoman Empire increased its power and domain, reaching its apex under the rule of Suleyman the Magnificent in the sixteenth century, when the Empire was one of the most powerful states in the world.At its height the Ottoman Empire includedmost of southeastern Europe, as far as the gates of Vienna. It included present-day Hungary, the Balkans and Greeceand parts ofmodern-day Ukraine. Egypt and much of North Africa including Algeria were controlled by the Ottomans, as was the Arabian Peninsula. In the Middle East it included portions of regions now occupied bySyria, Iraq, Israel and Iran.The map appears to be based on the 1634 Blaeu map of the same territories. It was published almost two hundred years after the conquest of Byzantium, when the decline of the Ottoman Empire was already underway. Over the centuries the power of the Empire would increasingly decline until finally being replaced in the 20th century when Ataturk led the movement that resulted in the founding of the Turkish Republic.Embellishment includes a title cartouche with two cherubs, vignettes of ships at full sail on the sea, a battle at sea, and some friendly sea monsters. A distance scale showing German miles is in the lower right corner of the map.Condition: Map is inB condition with a fine impression, lovely color and full margins. Some offsetting is apparent as a result of the original coloring. This is a scarce 1756 map of Asia Minor or Turkey by Robert de Vaugondy. It covers from the Aegean Sea to Mesopotamia and from the Black Sea to Cyprus. The map notes the ancient Kingdoms of Asia Minor…, many of which were Greek colonies or heavily influences by Ancient Greek culture. These include Mysia, Hellespontus, Lycia, Pisidia, Cilicia, Phrygia, Bithynia, Cappadocia, Armenia Minor, Pontus and others. This region saw the development of currency, the conquest of Troy, as well as the construction of three of the Ancient WorldÂ's Seven Wonders. The map includes a beautifully engraved title cartouche in the top left quadrant. This map was drawn by Robert de Vaugondy in 1752 and published in the 1757 issue of his Atlas Universal . The Atlas Universal was one of the first atlases based upon actual surveys. Therefore, this map is highly accurate (for the period) and has most contemporary town names correct, though historic names are, in many cases, incorrect or omitted. References: Rumsey 3353.011. Size 14.5 x 19.25 Inches. This is an elegant 1700 Edward Wells map of the eastern Mediterranean and ancient Mesopotamia. Coverage extends from Cyprus and Asia Minor,… eastwards as far as the Caspian and Persian Gulf. The central focus is the watershed of the Tigris and Euphrates, thus embracing ancient Mesopotamia and Babylonia. The kingdoms of Assyria, Armenia, Palestine and Syria are prominent. A decorative title cartouche appears in the lower right, surmounted by the arms of the dedicatee - Prince William, Duke of Gloucester and the son of Queen Anne, who, when this map was being prepared, was a student of Wells. The sickly William never lived to see his tutor's work completed. Publication History and Census This map was engraved by Robert Spofforth for inclusion in Edward Wells' 1700 work, A New Sett of Maps Both of Ancient and Present Geography . Notes the ancient Kingdoms of Asia Minor, many of which were Greek colonies or heavily influenced by Greek culture. These include Mysia, Lycia, Pisidia, Cilicia, Phrygia, Pontus, Lydia, Caria, Thynia, Phrygia Minor, Cappadocia, Armenia Minor, etc. This region saw the development of currency, the conquest of Troy as well as the construction of three of the Ancient World's Seven Wonders. This is an attractive c. 1708 map of Turkey or Asia Minor. Issued by Petrus Schenk and Gerard Valk, it was engraved in 1636 by Henry Hondius, based on…the 1634 map by Johannes Blaeu. The map depicts the region from the Aegean Sea and some of the Aegean Islands to the Euphrates River and from the Black Sea to Cyprus and the Mediterranean Sea. Beautifully detailed, several important towns, cities, rivers, and regional topography are noted. Mountains are beautifully rendered in profile. The important cities of Constantinople (Istanbul), Smyrna (Izmir), and Antioch are identified. The Ottoman Empire, at its peak, controlled the entire region during this period, with Constantinople as its capital. In the middle part of the 17th century, after its period of growth, the Ottoman Empire would enter a period of gradual decline and stagnation. A beautifully illustrated sea battle in the Mediterranean depicts one of the many naval battles fought by the Ottomans. Another illustration of a sea monster is also featured in the bottom right quadrant. A beautifully engraved title banner adorns the top of the map, with a scale depicted in the bottom right quadrant. This is a rare 1538 map of Greece and the region surrounding Constantinople, executed by Sebastian Münster for inclusion in his edition of Solinus' Polyhistor . It predates by two years the map of Greece in Münster's 15…40 edition of Ptolemy's Geographia, but it shares with other early maps of Greece the Ptolemaic conic projection. It is a sixteenth century woodcut showing third century geographical knowledge of the region - although at its northern extents, contemporary place names intrude. The map extends from Dalmatia in the west to Cappadocia, Cilicia and Cyprus in the east; it extends from Crete and Cyprus in the south to Poland, Muscovy and Sarmatia in Europe in the north. The Black Sea and the Meotian Swamp (the Sea of Azov) also appear. The map is boldly and legibly presented, with hachured oceans, and with mountains shown pictorially. The cities of Adrianopolis and Constantinople are marked pictorially as well, suggesting their greatness. In Support of Solinus While the physical geography of the map is basically Ptolemaic, the names of nations, and people, however, are consistent with those appearing in Solinus' text - a sensible choice, indicating that with this map Münster was applying his best available topography specifically in order to illustrate and clarify the work in which the map was to appear. Publication History and Census This map was first issued in the 1538 edition of Solinus' Polyhistor , which was published by Petri but for which Münster also supplied the text and presumably the transcription of the 3rd century work. A 1543 edition was also printed including this map. The two editions are easily distinguished: the map title of the the 1543 second edition has a full stop not present on this first edition of 1538. About thirty examples of this edition of Polyhistor are catalogued in OCLC, with some 23 of the 1543 edition. We see examples of the separate map in only three institutional collections: The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Universitatsbibliothek Eichstatt, and the National Library of Australia. This is Laurent Fries' 1525 edition of Martin Waldseemüller's Ptolemaic map of Anatolia, one of the earliest generally acquirable maps of what would become modern-day Turkey. A Closer Look This woodcut map depicts the region from the A…egean Sea to the Euphrates River and from the Black Sea to Cyprus and the Mediterranean Sea. Mountains are shown pictorially, using both a 'bread loaf' form and a more recognizable indication of hills. Rivers and towns are marked and named, as well as the region's Ancient Roman provinces. Although Anatolia has been home to many empires, by the time Ptolemy recorded the toponomy of this region, the mapped area had been brought entirely under Roman control; thus, it was among the better-known places of the Ptolemaic World. A New Ptolemy Fries' model for this map appeared in the 1513 edition of Claudius Ptolemy's Geographia , whose translation and maps were the collaboration of Martin Waldseemüller and Matthias Ringmann, the duo best known for their 1507 world map, Universalis Cosmographia . Starting with the maps printed in the 1482 Ulm Ptolemy, Waldseemüller and Ringmann consulted Greek and Latin sources to produce an authoritative, corrected edition of the classical proto-atlas. Waldseemüller's name did not appear in the published book, as he and Ringmann had had a falling out by 1513. Publication History and Census Fries' iteration of this map was first issued in the 1522 Strasbourg edition of Ptolemy's Geographia . A further edition was produced in that same city in 1525, corresponding to the present example. Afterward, two additional editions of 1535 and 1541 were published in Lyons and Vienne-in-the-Dauphane, respectively. Overall, the four editions of Fries' Ptolemy are well represented in institutional collections. The separate map is listed in OCLC in four examples (the 1525 and 1535 editions).
