It covers the city of Manchester and depicts individual streets, buildings, parks, canals, docks, railways, stations, and a host of additional topographic features…. Notes the Throstle Nest Farm, where Manchester United would build their football ground Old Trafford, in 1909. The Manchester Ship Canal, the world's first planned industrial estate and the largest in England, is noted. A street index near the left and right margins is included. In 1830, Liverpool and Manchester became the first cities to have an intercity rail link, through the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. This map was issued in c.1890 by G. W. Bacon and Company, London.

A highly detailed c. 1926 map of Dublin, Ireland published by G.W. Bacon and Co. It was produced soon after Ireland's turbulent revolutionary period and ref…lects the lingering effects of the conflict. A Closer Look Coverage embraces municipality of Dublin along with suburbs to the north and south. Hospitals, train stations, prisons, workhouses, schools and universities, barracks, and other public institutions are indicated with black, parks, football grounds, and school campuses with green, major roads with yellow, and waterways with blue. Industrial and commercial facilities line the city's east side, especially north of the River Liffey. The 'Brewery' along James St. is the Guinness Brewery (also known as the St. James's Gate Brewery), one of several breweries and distilleries noted. Handwritten annotations point out the location of the original city walls in the vicinity of Dublin Castle. Northeast of the city center, planned 'garden city' suburbs are evident in Marino Park and Croydon Park. Several military facilities appear, which are helpful in dating. The names 'McKee Barracks,' the 'Civic Guard Depot,' 'Colins Barracks,' and others all suggest the late 1920s, when these names were adopted. Building a Free Ireland The decade that preceded this map was a tumultuous for Ireland. Long-simmering Irish republican sentiment burst during the 1916 Easter Rising, when hundreds of rebels and volunteers seized key sites throughout Dublin. The British rushed in reinforcements, including heavy weapons, and managed to suppress the uprising after a week of intense street fighting. The rebels' ad hoc headquarters at the General Post Office (here as 'Post Office' on O'Connell St.) was heavily damaged in the fighting, and most of the leaders of the uprising were later executed at the Kilmainham Gaol, just beyond the scope of this map at left. Historians debate the extent of support for the uprising in Dublin at the outset, but the heavy-handed British response undoubtedly angered many and converted them to supporters of republicanism. During the Irish War of Independence (1919 - 1921), Dublin saw assassinations and other guerrilla-style attacks, which were responded to with more executions and reprisal atrocities, especially at the hands of the 'Black and Tans.' During the Irish Civil War (1922 - 1923), Irish Republican Army forces hostile to the Anglo-Irish Treaty seized the Four Courts near center here, leading to a tense standoff with pro-treaty forces of the new provisional government, led by Michael Collins, who had recently been one of the most successful anti-British guerrilla fighters. Under pressure from the British, who threatened to send troops back to Dublin to suppress the anti-treaty rebels, Collins ordered the Four Courts bombarded on June 28, 1922, often considered the opening shot of the Civil War. Nearly a year of assassinations (including of Collins), ambushes, and other attacks resulted in an uneasy truce. The Collins Barracks, just to the west of the Four Courts, was named in honor of the slain republican leader. Publication History and Census This map was published around the year 1926 by G.W. Bacon. Due to uncertainty over the map's date and how many editions of a map with this title exist, it is difficult to establish a precise census. However, maps with the same title as the current example are included in five OCLC listings with speculative dates ranging from 1916 to 1937 and are held by thirteen institutions worldwide. For reasons explained above we can assume with a fair degree of confidence that this map dates from 1926 or soon thereafter. As some catalog listings include the copyright information at the bottom-left corner, we are able to establish that there are at least two editions of a map with this title (Copyright L-570 and Copyrigh.

It was published during the 'South African Crisis,' leading up to and including the Second Boer War (1898 -… 1901). A Closer Look The view details roadways, rivers, towns and cities, rivers, mountains, and other political and geographical features. An inset in the upper left details the region from Mafeking (Mahikeng) to Pretoria. A second inset the lower right details northern Natal (KwaZulu-Natal). Historical Context This view was issued to capitalize on British civilian interest in the Boer Wars. The Boer Wars were fought during 1880 - 1881 and 1899 - 1902 by the British Empire against the settlers of two independent Boer republics, the Orange Free State and the Transvaal Republic. Both wars were part of the British efforts to consolidate South Africa, particularly after the Witwatersrand Gold Rush of 1886 spurred aggressive British migration to the Transvaal. Chromolithography Chromolithography, sometimes called oleography, is a color lithographic technique developed in the mid-19th century. The process involved using multiple lithographic stones, one for each color, to yield a rich composite effect. Oftentimes, the process would start with a black basecoat upon which subsequent colors were layered. Some chromolithographs used 30 or more separate lithographic stones to achieve the desired product. Chromolithograph color could also be effectively blended for even more dramatic results. The process became extremely popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when it emerged as the dominant method of color printing. The vivid color chromolithography produced made it exceptionally effective for advertising and propaganda imagery. Publication History and Census There were at least three different editions of this view, all undated but published approximately in 1890, 1899, and 1901, with the latter two coinciding with the Second Boer War and often included in a booklet titled 'The South African crisis.' The editions are distinguished by the location of the title, either within the main image, as here, or along the bottom margin, and other minor differences. In editions with the title in the bottom margin, the view extends slightly further to the northeast to include a corner of Portuguese East Africa. Presumably, the views including Portuguese East Africa are later editions, as Portugal sought to check British influence in Southern Africa and moved the capital of its East African colony to nearby Lourenço Marques (Maputo) in 1898; thus, the present example should be the earliest edition. Due to uncertainty over the date, there are ten listings in the OCLC under this title, with any edition of the view being held by eleven institutions in North America, Europe, and South Africa, including, in the United States, the New York Public Library, Yale University, Princeton University, the Boston Athenaeum, and the State Library of Massachusetts. The map was produced during the Mahdist War, a widespread revolt… against the British-backed Khedivate of Egypt, more specifically during or soon after the Siege of Khartoum and an ultimately failed British expedition to relieve the city. A Closer Look Coverage extends from Darfur to the Red Sea, covering an area largely congruent with the present-day Republic of Sudan. The Nile River system, including the White, Blue, and Black (Atbarah) Nile, stands out prominently in bold black lines. Roads ('routes and tracks'), railways, telegraph lines, garrisons, towns, hills, wells, and other water sources are indicated. The Arabic names of regions and geographic features are included, along with local groups or tribes. A legend at top-right lists translations of Arabic terms, while five inset maps surround the main map, depicting (clockwise): a wider view of Egypt and Sudan, the port city of Suakin, Khartoum, a map of the entirety of Africa, and a map showing the land approaches to Suakin from the south. The Gordon Relief Expedition This map is undated and only obliquely mentions conflict, but it was produced in the context of the Mahdist War, a massive Holy War against the rule of the British-backed Khedivate of Egypt beginning in 1881. The conflict was initially only one of many in the orbit of Britain's global empire, but it captured the public's imagination in 1884, when the charismatic adventurer-soldier Charles Gordon, acting beyond his orders from the British government, decided to defend Khartoum in a months-long siege, prompting the organization of a relief expedition. Charles George Gordon (1833 - 1885) was one of the more colorful and storied British imperial adventurers of the 19th century. Born to a family with a long line of British military service, he attended a military academy and then served in the Royal Engineers during the Crimean War with great distinction. Already at a young age, Gordon had a reputation for pluckiness and for disregarding orders, which would ultimately be his undoing. Finding peacetime life uninteresting, Gordon volunteered to fight in China during the Second Opium War (1856 - 1860), which he arrived too late to participate in, instead finding work in Shanghai leading a multinational group of mercenaries known as the Ever Victorious Army against the rebels of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. He gained a reputation for honesty and effectiveness, imposing strict discipline on his mercenary force that was otherwise prone to plunder, rape, and corruption. Gordon was highly decorated by the Tongzhi Emperor and was praised by the foreign community in China, earning him the nickname 'Chinese Gordon.' At the same time, his frankness, such as criticizing Chinese officials to their face and refusing monetary rewards from the emperor, was seen as uncouth and impudent. After his service to the emperor in China, Gordon found employment with the Egyptian Khedive government, which appointed him as governor of their southern Equatoria province, over which they had only nominal control. Gordon was appalled by the Ottoman-Egyptian bureaucracy, which he found oppressive and corrupt, and the prevalence of the slave trade (Gordon's abolitionism was inspired by his intense religiosity). Nevertheless, his capabilities as an administrator and diplomat allowed him to rise to the position of Governor-General of the Sudan, earning the new nickname of 'Gordon Pasha'. Still, Gordon eventually alienated other officials in the bureaucracy (several of whom he fired) to the point that he was not asked to continue in his position and left Egypt in 1880. He then briefly worked as a bureaucrat in India before resigning, returning to China (against orders from the military).

Bacon's map/chart emerges out of the great age of data collection - a period following the Age of Discovery in which improved transportation and intellectual optimism encouraged a furious effort to catalog, 'collect', and contextualize the natural world. The present map synthesizes these efforts into a single dense infographic aimed at both the next generation of explorer/scientists and the armchair adventurer. Herein, information is effectively summarized and categorized, embracing an impressive range of subjects: astronomy, geography, transportation, ethnology, geology, anthropology, and more. The Map The chart's focal point is the world map at center. The map presents the world on a Mercator projection with countries, trade routes, distances, and other detail defined. It is surrounded by the flags of numerous nations, as well as a comparative chart of twenty-four man-made structures, and another of rivers of the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. People and Places Short 'ethnographic' discussions appear to the left, right, and immediately below this central panel, with six portraits of the 'races of man'. A panel presenting national costumes appears below. Human Society and History The chart continues with illustrations of some of the world's coinage with exchange rates to British pounds. A table listing '100 of the World's Great Men' from Homer to Cecil Rhodes occupies the left portion of the sheet below the currency and is followed by a list of seventeen famous women. Both are decidedly Anglo-centric. A similar chart lists the 'Most Famous Battles of the World' from the Battle of Troy to the 1905 Battle of Tsushima. A 'comparative time chart of the world' relative to Greenwich separates the two tables. Comparative Mountains A comparative chart of the heights of the world's tallest mountains occupies the bottom part of the chart. The chief mountains of the Western and Eastern Hemispheres appear in the left and right, respectively, with each peak identified by name. At center, a diagram presents plant life at various altitudes. Astronomy and Transportation At the top of the sheet, diagrams and a short text focus on the solar system. The diagram in the upper left illustrates the inner solar system, presenting Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars' orbits around the Sun. A chart comparing the size of the eight planets and the Sun occupies the top right. An illustration of the Earth as a planet appears at top center. Below the discussion of the solar system are six vignettes illustrating modes of transportation. This is a c. 1885 George Washington Bacon pocket map of Ireland. The map depicts Ireland in full, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Irish Sea and from Scotland to St. George's Channel. Cities, t…owns, and villages are labeled, including Dublin, Belfast, Londonderry, and Cork. Roads are illustrated throughout, and the rail network is shown by black and white dashed lines. International steamship routes are also noted, including the route from Londonderry to New York City. A key, situated in the lower left explains all these notations. Four inset maps highlight different areas around Ireland. Two, located in the lower right corner, focus on the environs of Cork and the environs of Dublin, respectively. The Lakes of Killarney are illustrated in a circular inset situated in the Atlantic off the coast of County Clare, and finally a circular inset featuring the environs of Belfast is included in the upper left corner.
