Larousse consacre un long article et que Weill et Tchernoff citent abondamment, est représentatif d'un certain courant de pensée de la première génération des "quarante-huitards" face à l'évolution des mentalités. L'auteur dresse un bilan amer de la situation morale de son pays et de la décadence, qu'il analyse comme irréversible, de l'esprit de liberté hérité de 1789.
