[Ref…erence: Tymm and Ashley, Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Weird Fiction Magazines, pp. 476-481]. Wear along bottom edge with some minor loss, a very good copy. (23882).

Condizione: A generally fine set. (31556). Small octavo, ten issues, pictorial wrappers. Digest magazine. This was to be a companion to Galaxy Science Fiction, in the tradition of Unknown. Author's include Damon Knight, Frank Robinson, Richard Matheson, Robert Bloch, Philip K. Dick, Isaac Asimov, John Wyndham, Algis Budrys, Zenn…a Henderson, Jerome Bixby, Philip Jose Farmer, Fredric Brown, and others. It could not duplicate the audience of Campbell's Unknown which failed due to WWII paper shortages. This magazine's content was not broad based fantasy fiction, while it did publish quality fiction, it stayed away from traditional fantasy and popular sword and sorcery. It also got lost in the SF digest magazine boom. The covers of the first two issues are by Richard Powers. [Reference: Tymm and Ashley, Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Weird Fiction Magazines, pp. 137-142].

Escoffier, A. [Georges Auguste Escoffier (28 October 1846 - 12 February 1935) was a French chef, restaurateur and culinary writer who popularised and updated traditional French cooking methods. Much of Escoffier's technique was based on that of Marie-Antoine Carême (8 June 1784 - 12 January 1833), one of the codifiers of French haute cuisine, but Escoffier's achievement was to simplify and modernise Carême's elaborate and ornate style. [Mairi Mackenzie (1 March 1879 - 23 July 1953) was the daughter of Osgood Hanbury Mackenzie (1842-1922). In 1862 he had purchased the Inverewe Estate near Poolewe, Scotland, and set to work to establish a 50 acre garden on an unpromising coastal site].

Condizione: Very Good. First English translated edition hard back binding in publisher's original forest green cloth covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine, M. Mackenzie in gilt to the front cover. 8vo. 9½'' x 6¼''. The first edition was printed in 1903 in French, this second edition was published in 1907, the thir…d in 1912, and the current fourth edition in 1921. Contains photographic frontispiece portrait with tissue-guard, 880 printed pages of text. From Mairi Mackenzie with lovely illustrated family bookplate looking out over Loch Ewe from Inverewe House to the front free end paper, text across the top of the bookplate 'Some in the Sun and Some in the Shade' referring to plants grown at Inverewe, below her printed name 'Mairi Mackenzie'. Slight age tanning to the text block edges and down the spine, rubbing to the corners, spine ends rolled over and in Very Good square and tight condition. By the time Mairi was born, Osgood Mackenzie was 17 years into his lifelong project. Her parent's marriage broke down while she was still young, and she seems to have spent part of her time with her mother. However, it seems that while still a child she became enthused with her father's vision and worked alongside him to help turn it into reality. In 1907 at the age of 28, Mairi married Robert Hanbury. When Osgood Mackenzie died in 1922, the work of completing Inverewe Garden was carried forward by Mairi. Robert Hanbury died in 1933, and in 1935 Mairi married Ronald Sawyer, a landowner and farmer. Together they rebuilt Inverewe House, which had stood ruined since a serious fire in 1914, and under their stewardship, her father's dreams of Inverewe Garden developed into reality. Member of the P.B.F.A. FOOD [Cuisine Française].

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. In Hebrew. 256 pages. 198 x 140 mm. The inscription by Hilles is to Molly Picon and husband Jacob Kalich upon their visit to the storied Mikve Israel in Holon at edge of Tel Aviv. Shlomo Hilles (Solomon Hiles) was a writer of fiction, including for children, including plays , an educator a…nd a school administrator. At age 6 he moved with his father to the town of Soroki in the Serbian basin. He studied in kheder, but also acquired a general education through private tutors. In 1901 he taught and administered a Hebrew school in the city of Markulsht. At 18 he married, in 1903 he won third place in the first literary competition in the history of Hebrew literature, organized by the Hatzofe newspaper with his story "Life Against Life." After World War One he established and directed the Office of the emigration of Jews from Ukraine, and the schools founded by " Joint." Later he was the supervisor of the Tarbut (= Culture) school network. In 1923 he founded and edited the magazine of the Yiddish "Der Haiylozer Yid" (The Jew without a mothreland). In 1925 , Hillel immigrated to Eretz Israel, settled in Mikveh Israel , and was a teacher there for more than ten years. In 1935 , a year after the death of Haim Nachman Bialik , Hillels became the first director of the Bialik House. In 1939 , Hillels went on an educational mission to the United States, returning from there only after World War II , in 1946 . While in the United States, he wrote and published various publications in the field of education and Hebrew literature. In 1952, he received the Kugel Prize for Literature from the Municipality of Holon. It was the first time the Kugel Prize was betowed. Hillels best and most important book is work offered here, the novel Har Hakramim (=The Vineyards Mountain), which tells the story of Jewish villagers in Bessarabia. The inscription by Hilles is to Molly Picon and husband Jacob Kalich upon their visit to the storied Mikve Israel in Holon at edge of Tel Aviv. Molly Picon was a fabled actress of stage and screen and her husband Jacob Kalich was a great actor in his own right. Picon was born Malka Opiekun in New York City Feb 28, 1898 and died in Lancaster, Pennsylvania April 5, 1992. She was a U.S. actress of stage, screen and television, a lyricist and dramatic story-teller. Years active: 1904-1984. Husband: Jacob Kalich (1919-1975). She was a star of the Yiddish theatre and film, but later turned to English-language productions. Her parents were Polish Jewish emigrants: Clara (née Ostrow), a wardrobe mistress, and Louis Opiekun, a shirtmaker. Opiekun is "guardian" or "caretaker" in Polish. She later changed it to Picon. Her career began at the age of six years in the Yiddish Theatre. In 1912, she debuted at the Arch Street Theatre in Philadelphia and became a star of the Yiddish Theater District, performing in plays in the District for seven years. Picon was so popular in the 1920s that many shows had her adopted name, Molly, in their title. In 1931, she opened the Molly Picon Theatre. She appeared in many films, starting with silent movies. Her earliest films were made in Europe; among the first was the Yiddish film East and West, made in Vienna in 1923, which is the earliest of her films that survives. The film depicts a clash of New and Old World Jewish cultures. She plays a U.S.-born daughter who travels with her father back to Galicia in East Central Europe. Her husband Jacob Kalich played one of her close relatives. Picon's most famous film, Yidl Mitn Fidl (1936), was made on location in Poland and shows her wearing male clothing through most of the film. In the film, a girl and her father are forced by poverty to set out on the road as traveling musicians. For her safety, she disguises herself as a boy, which becomes inconvenient when she falls in love with one of the other musicians in the troupe. Later Mamele was made in Poland. In 1934, Picon had a musical comedy radio show, the Molly Picon Program, on WMCA. . . Inscribed by Author(s).
