A lovely pocket-sized edition recounting this French memoirist's suffering during a counter-revolt during the French Revolution. Marie Louis Victoire de Donnisan de La Rochejaquelein (1772-1857) is remembered for her memoirs describing her role and experience of the Revolt in the Vendée, a Royalist counter-revolution that took place on the west coast of France during the French Revolution and saw tens of thousands of casualties both military and civilian. A Royalist, her first husband was an opponent of the French Revolution and was killed during the Vendée Wars; she later married her late husband's cousin, who promptly tried to incite another Vendan rising, leading to his death. This is the first edition to be translated and printed in the United Kingdom. In a half calf binding with marbled boards and edges. Externally a trifle rubbed to the boards and extremities. Internally firmly bound, pages generally bright and clean with age toning and the odd spot. Very Good. book.
