As a result, many patients seek help from various "alternative and complementary" practitioners. Medical skills are best learned by apprenticeship, and no book can substitute for hands-on experience. Nonethe- less, I have endeavored in this book to integrate several approaches that attempt to solve the many diffi- culties one encounters when treating pain patients. It is intended for clinicians interested in integrative medicine, that is, combining the best of both western and oriental medicine. It is all too easy to develop a myopic perception of health and disease when one is not exposed to a variety of models of medical per- spective. Rather, I believe the ability to accurately diagnose and treat musculoskeletal and soft tissue dis- ease is critically dependent on the ability to move fluently amongst medical paradigms, and doing so is the mark of a su.
