This notion, first posited by de Saussure in the early 20th century, has for decades been neglected by linguists, particularly following Chomsky's heavy critiques of the 1950s. Yet since the emergence of formal semantics in the 1970s, the issue of compositionality has gained traction in the theoretical debate, becoming a selling point for linguistic theories.Yet the concept of 'compositionality' itself remains ill-defined, an issue this book addresses. Positioning compositionality as a cornerstone in linguistic theory, it argues that, contrary to widely held beliefs, there exist non-compositional languages, which shows that the concept of compositionality has empirical content. The author asserts that the existence of syntactic structure can flow from the fact that a compositional grammar cannot be delivered without prior agreement on the syntactic structure of the constituents.

Das Buch nähert sich dem Thema umfassend: philosophisch, physikalisch, logisch, sprachwissenschaftlich, gesellschaftlich und historisch.Der Leitgedanke ist, dass Wissen an einem materialen Substrat hängt, ohne dem es nicht existieren kann es existiert als Materie, der eine bestimmte Form zugewiesen wurde. Sowohl die Erlangung als auch die Bewahrung von Wissen kosten enorme Energie. Unsere Wissensgesellschaft muss sich mit der Frage auseinandersetzen, ob und in welchem Ausmaß der gegenwärtigen bzw. drohenden Energie- und Rohstoffkrise auch eine Wissenskrise folgen könnte.Die Erörterungen des ersten Teils des Buches gehen der Frage nach, was eigentlich Wissen ist und wie sich die Gesellschaft ihr Wissen verfügbar hält. Dies ist keineswegs nur eine physikalische, philosophische oder soziologische Fragestellung. Wissen erfordert aufgrund seiner schieren Menge umfassende, komplizierte und auch nachhaltige Infrastrukturen, um das einmal erlangte Wissen verfügbar zu halten und zu verbreiten. Um diese kulturhistorische Seite des Wissens geht es im zweiten Teil. Das Bestreben, Information möglichst schnell und einfach zu speichern und zu verbreiten, nimmt mit dem Buchdruck seinen Lauf. Die Digitalisierung und das Internet sind mit neuen Organisationsformen des Wissens der vorläufige Höhepunkt dieser Entwicklung, Information ist inzwischen immer und überall verfügbar geworden. Je mehr jedoch die Digitalisierung voranschreitet, umso klarer werden die problematischen Aspekte. Die massenhafte Erzeugung von Daten braucht inzwischen ansehnliche Mengen von Energie. Langfristig wird unsere Wissenskultur durch Kostenzwänge bedroht von der Entpersonalisierung des Wissens und die fehlende Einbettung in eine gesellschaftlichen Kontext, mehr noch als die Frage, wieviel Wissen wir uns eigentlich leisten können; denn Wissen, das lediglich abgespeichert wird, besitzt keinerlei Strahlkraft.
