Bryan Company of Columbia in 1972. The volume presents biographical accounts of thirty distinguished women associated with Laurens County, South Carolina, documenting their contributions to medicine, education, literature, public service, social welfare, preservation, religion, and civic life. This particular copy is especially notable for the presence of multiple signatures throughout the book, associated directly with the women profiled within, making it an unusual association copy rather than merely an ordinarily signed copy. Among the particularly noteworthy examples is Dr. Anne Austin Young, whose signature, "Dr Anne Austin Young," appears immediately beneath her photographic portrait on page 158 at the beginning of her biographical section. The accompanying printed caption identifies Dr. Young as the first woman from Laurens County to receive a medical degree. Her biography recounts her pioneering medical career, including her work in obstetrics and gynecology and her later practice in Anderson, South Carolina, where the text states that she delivered more than 9,000 babies. The placement of signatures in association with the individual subjects' portraits and biographical sections gives this copy particular interest as an artifact of the women, families, and historical community represented by the publication. Historical figures represented in the volume include Ann Pamela Cunningham, preservationist associated with the preservation of George Washington's Mount Vernon; Pulitzer Prize-winning South Carolina author Julia Mood Peterkin; Sarah Ward; Mary Musgrove; Dicey Langston; Mary Dillard; Wil Lou Gray; Irene Dillard Elliott; Marguerite Tolbert; Dr. Christine South Gee; Dr. Kate V. Wofford; Harriet Gray Blackwell; and numerous other women important to the history of Laurens County and South Carolina. Binding remains sound and attractive with light age and handling wear. Jacket shows age-related wear including rubbing, soiling/spotting, discoloration, edge wear, and several small tears/chips, particularly along the upper edges and spine area. Of particular importance, the signatures present throughout this copy are a feature of the copy and should not be confused with ordinary reader marginalia. All photographs are of the actual book offered for sale and form part of the condition description. An unusual multi-signed association copy of a significant 1972 South Carolina women's-history publication. The combination of original dust jacket, first-edition status, regional historical content, photographic biographies, and signatures associated with women represented within makes this a substantially more interesting copy than the ordinary unsigned edition.
