La fonction "sommeil" de son cerveau a été détruite par un éclat d'obus durant la Guerre de Corée. Il utilise ce temps libre à apprendre des dizaines de langues étrangères. Membre d'associations contestataires farfelues il est surveillé à la fois par le FBI et la CIA ce qui ne l'a pas empêché d'être un espion efficace. Tout se gâte en 1972 lors d'une entrevue avec l'agent suédois Harald Engstrom. Croyant Tanner militant de la Skoal (mouvement indépendantiste de la Suède méridionale) il le drogue au cognac et place son corps dans un congélateur.
