He is the main authority and virtually unique source on the life of this saint. In fact, this book was written only fifty years after Benedict¿s death. At the time relatively close to saint¿s life, oral tradition was implemented into written records to a large extent. Gregory often, in citing his sources, mentions personal conversations with other people about Benedict and eyewitnesses of the events.Gregory was so strongly attached to the figure of St. Benedict that he indicated his respect and love by assigning him a central role in the Dialogues. This collection forms part of that vast corpus of lives of the saints which were produced in the late antiquity and throughout the Middle Ages. The Dialogues consist of four books; the first and third deal with a number of holy persons and their miracles, with the single chapter devoted to each saint, while the fourth book deals with immortality of the soul.

It is in human nature to ponder such matters, and therefore, it is no wonder that similar questions appeared in Christianity as early as the writing of the Scripture. Christianity began with an announcement that time and history were about to end.1 The interpretations of the Bible depended on their writers' attitude.Consequently, certain passages from the Bible were interpreted literally or allegorically, but common ground was established in understanding the Book of Daniel and the Revelation of John, which were seen as good examples of eschatological writings. The second coming of Christ was the most important eschatological event. Some authors saw this second arrival as a literal, pre-millennial event, in which Christ would reign on Earth a thousand years before the second coming. Others saw it allegorically, as a postmillennial event.

The distinctiveness of the classical works was fading at the time of the late antiquity, while Christianity was taking over the primacy and the throne over the society and the civilization. Vivarium was a unique foundation in terms of launching a program of Christian education, enhanced with secular studies. Cassiodorus provided his monks with an opulent library. This library in Vivarium was enriched by both Christian and classical works and was literally the only library enhanced with the classical authors at the time; other monastic schools of this kind rejected classical writers as well as classical education altogether. In the history of scholarship it was presumed that Cassiodorus was responsible for the transmission of the books to the posterity and that his role was crucial in this preservation. Still, Cassiodorus aim was of a different kind. Having not been able to foresee the imminent devastation as well as the sharp edges between the two eras the way we see them today, he could not predict tendencies in neglecting classics.
