Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Seminar paper from the year 1993 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, Ruhr-University of Bochum, course: Literature III: Jane Austen, language: English, abstract: Plot and characters grow together in a perfectly balanced compost of manners and values. Both e…lements live in the design of manners, customs and values which altogether form the social fabric. The centre of the novel is the firm and rock-solid society which is based on values like status, manners, education and goodness, which again all rest on wealth. Those values are absolutes but not constants. This means that a rich man might have a lack of education or goodness and that a poor man might have goodness, education and taste (although this second combination is not very likely). Of all the values status is the one that comes first. It is sought after by everybody and is displayed to everybody, too. The display is usually also a way of pursuing status, for it indicates what one has a right to covet. The acquisition of status (e.g. inheritance or marriage) is always accompanied by its display.

First a short summary of the contents of the book will be given. Afterwards the structure of contents, the author's qualification and competence, formal aspects, the bibliographical background and the style of writing (and in this context also the target group of readers) will be evaluated.I have chosen this specific book, because it deals with the aspect of horses in the Indian culture. As hippology and horse riding are hobbies of mine, I have a special interest in this specific aspect of Indian and North American culture from a horseman's / horsewoman's point of view. As I possess a solid particular knowledge in the field of horsemanship I am able to critically judge and evaluate literature which deals with the topic of horses.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 1998 in the subject American Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1 (A), Ruhr-University of Bochum (English Seminar), course: Seminar: Introduction to african-american Literature, language: English, abstract: IntroductionIn th…is essay we are going to deal with Black American English and its specific features and differences to Standard English. The analysis includes an introduction to the grammar of BAE, its specific vocabulary, the African elements in BAE and the ethnographic speech behaviour connected with the use of BAE. At the beginning a short survey will be given on who actually speaks BAE.1. Who speaks Black American English In general, we can say that all those speak BAE (= Black American English) who consider themselves to be Black. Those are 80% of the Black American population. But also some Puerto Ricans and members of the southern plantation owning class do use this language. In former times BAE was also used by some Indian tribes and Seminoles. The dialect patterns depend on social factors rather than racial or geographic. Many people are capable of several dialects, and also some Whites do speak those dialects. The history of the Afro-American languages correlates with a caste system. The use of BAE indicates a low level of education as well as a low social standard. It indicates that the speaker belongs to a social group that has remained unassimilated to the white culture. Rich black families tend to speak Standard English. In the use of Standard English among Blacks agegrading plays a great role. First the children adopt the language they learn in their peer groups, later on they learn Standard English in school. The age-grading towards Standard English is closely connected with status grading, i.e. children of families with a higher social level tend to the use of Standard English. The higher a Black climbs on the social ladder the more he tends to Standard English. In general, women find it easier to affiliate with the middle-class and to adopt the white culture standards. But the use of BAE is also an indicator of racial awareness and identity. And even highly educated Blacks want to express their roots linguistically to show their identification. They do so by the use of ethnic slang which they use, even if they detest the grammar and phonology of BAE 1.1 Dillard, J.L.; Black English, New York, 1972. (p.229 - 240).

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 1998 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 2 (B), Ruhr-University of Bochum (English Seminar), course: Literatur III, language: English, abstract: IntroductionThis essay is going to deal with telling and…writing as a means of liberation in the novel The Color Purple. Liberation in this context means, of course, women's liberation. The paper comprises the analysis of the protagonist's motivation for writing, its effects on her and the significance of different dialects. Furthermore the effects of the literary form of the letter as means of articulation will be explained and also the influence of Shug and her feminist language on Celie.Motivation for writing Already at the opening of the novel a reason for Celie's writing is given.:You better not tell anybody but God. It'd kill your mammy.1Celie takes this warning literally. She is frightened of her father and therefore obeys. Another motivation for Celie's writing we get to know from one of Nettie's letters to Celie: .I remember one time you said your life made you feel so ashamed you couldn't even talk about it to God, you had to write it, bad as you thought your writing was. Well, now I know what you meant.2Celie feels guilty and ashamed, because of the alleged incest with her father. She is not allowed to tell anybody (certainly not her mother) but needs to articulate herself somehow to enable herself to cope with her situation. So Celie starts to write her letters to God, when at the age of 14 years her record of sorrow and pain begins. Celie loses her mother and later on also Nettie, her sister. From then on writing becomes even more significant, for it is also a substitute for the mother's and sister's missing love.31 Walker, Alice; The Color Purple, London, 1992. (p. 3)2 ebenda, p. 1103 Fifer, Elizabeth; 'The Dialect And Letters of The Color Purple'in: Rainwater C., Scheick, W:J. (eds.); Contemporary American Woman Writers, Lexington, 1985. (p. 156).

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 1999 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1- (A-), Ruhr-University of Bochum (English Seminar), course: Proseminar: Pragmatics, language: English, abstract: IntroductionIn this pa…per we are going to deal with different theories concerning apology strategies. As there exists a variety of different theories, I chose just three of them for this paper. I will introduce their concepts, compare their differencesand try to give a final evaluation of the three concepts.Blum-Kulka/Olshtain1I will begin with the model of Shoshana Blum-Kulka and Elite Olshtain. They first of all classify apology as a speech act, name preconditions that are inevitable for an apology to take place and then list different strategy types.Apologie als a speech act: classificationThe apology belongs to the post-event-acts, i.e. it signals that a certain type of event has already taken place. Moreover, the speaker recognizes the fact that a violation of a social norm has been committed and that the speaker is at least partially involved in its cause. The involvement means a loss of face (= face threatening) for the speaker and is hearer-supportive.21 Blum-Kulka, S., Olshtain, E.; 'Requests and Apologies: A Cross-Cultural Study of Speech Act Realization Patterns'in: Applied Linguistics, 5 / 1984. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 1999 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1 (A), Ruhr-University of Bochum (English Seminar), course: Advanced seminar: types of modern english comedy, language: English, abstract:… 1. IntroductionThere are certain characteristics in Joe Orton's plays that are very typical and of distinctive significance. The aspect of gender roles is one of those characteristics. The purpose of this paper is to explain, why the aspect of gender roles is so important, which different concepts of gender roles we can distinguish in Orton's plays and, eventually, to show and explain those different concepts explicitly at three selected plays.2. What are gender roles Before we are going to discuss the impact of gender roles in Orton's plays, we should give a short definition of what is meant by this term.Sex and gender are two terms that have to be clearly distinguished from each other. Whereas the term sex means the natural sex of a person, animal or thing, the term gender is aimed at the grammatical and sociological system of sex-references. In the German language, e.g., the grammatical gender of a girl is neuter (das Mädchen) although her natural sex is, of course, feminine. In our context the term gender refers to the different concepts of roles that exist in society, i.e. different sets of norms for behaviour that are associated with being either feminine or masculine and thus create sexual identity. A traditional concept of the feminine role would, for instance, be the one of the housewife and mother, staying at home, cooking and looking after the children. Accordingly, the traditional concept of the masculine role would be the one of the hard-working head of the family. Of course, there are lots of other concepts, some of which we will find in Orton's plays.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu.
