Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. Book Club Edition. Since it was first published in 1789, this delightful collection of letters by the country parson, Gilbert White, describing the flora and fauna of his Hampshire village, had gone through around 150 different editions before The Gilbert White Mu…seum commissioned this new edition. This book carries a foreword by Lord Selborne, a heartfelt introduction by David Attenborough, reproductions of Thomas Bewick bird engravings, and ten remarkable pencil drawings by Frederick Marns. I was lucky enough to have watched this artist/designer/hand-letterer (I think he preferred that term over "calligrapher"), work on a couple of occasions. Whether he was addressing an envelope, or writing an owner's name in gold ink on the lid of a fantastically valuable grand piano, his work was exact and meticulous to a degree that inspired awe and disbelief. The ten drawings in this book took him a year to complete, going out to the location each morning with 200 sharpened pencils in his bag so that he didn't have to waste time sharpening them when he worked. A limited edition of 150 copies, signed by Marns, Lord Selborne and David Attenborough was also published. This copy is the Book Club Associates printing of the first edition, published simultaneously, or very shortly after, the first trade edition. There is a hint of yellowing to top edges, but a near fine copy in good dust jacket with worn and nicked edges, laminate coming off on rear gutter, and a creased tear with small loss at base of front panel. I also have some prints of some of Frederick Marns' drawings from this book. Use the "Contact Seller" link to make inquiries. Frederick Marns (illustratore).
