Aggiungi al carrello4to, 3 pp. 42 lines of text. Good, on aged paper. He is sorry not to have known about Niggeman's bank holiday visit to Hatfield House: 'it would have been an immense pleasure to us all to see you. Do come down and pay us a private call some other time.' The 'points' she makes 'are just the kind of thing we want to know'. Salisbury did not 'go round the Hosue with the visitors, for I did not wish to embarrass the guides; but clearly there is a good deal more organisation needed before our machinery works smoothly'. He responds to a number of points, including one 'about people unlocking cupboards and climbing on stairs', and another about putting 'rather larger labels on the pictures'.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaper. Condizione: Good. First Edition. An Original Handwritten Letter Signed by Future Prime Minister 3rd Marquess of Salisbury to Sir Henry James Maine. Dated 1879. A letter to Maine about a poet (W Stifaud) who new Maine and Salisbury met on a his trip to Constantinople. The poet entertained him crossing the English Channel even though he was sea-sick. He goes on to say that he does not know how much the poet will achieve in the future but he certainly lifted the grievances of the wine shippers of Bordeaux. On the second sentence the poets name has been blanked out by paper but left clearly on later on in the letter Robert Arthur Talbot Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury 1830-1903 was a British statesman and Conservative politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom three times for a total of over thirteen years. He was also Foreign Secretary for much of his tenure, and during his last two years of office he was Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal. Sir Henry James Sumner Maine 1822-1888, was a British Whig comparative jurist and historian. He is famous for the thesis outlined in his book Ancient Law that law and society developed "from status to contract." According to the thesis, in the ancient world individuals were tightly bound by status to traditional groups, while in the modern one, in which individuals are viewed as autonomous agents, they are free to make contracts and form associations with whomever they choose. Because of this thesis, Maine can be seen as one of the forefathers of modern legal anthropology, legal history and sociology of law. Size is 180mm x 115mm. Condition is good. Light folding creases.
