Marryat, a professional writer and British naval officer, toured the United States in 1837 and first published his observations in 1839. The author started in Ne…w York, crossed that state and went as far as Sault St. Marie, across Upper Canada, and back to Montreal. He also visited Washington and Kentucky, as well as commenting on American habits, language, and institutions. HOWES M300. SABIN 44696. CLARK III:204. CONDITION : Spine chipped with missing paper label. Boards with edge and corner wear, fore-edges chewed. Small worm hole pp. 27-82 (not affecting text). Shaken. Moderate foxing (mainly end-pages).
