Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fine. 1st Edition, Special Edition. A magnificent high-command presentation copy of General George C. Marshall's final wartime report, specially bound in black morocco-grain leather, gilt stamped with the arms of the United States and titled to the upper cover, with Portal's name in gilt: "Marshal of the R…oyal Air Force Sir Charles F. A. Portal." From the private collection of Lord Portal. UNITED STATES ARMY CHIEF OF STAFF. Biennial Report of the Chief of Staff of the United States Army to the Secretary of War, July 1, 1943, to June 30, 1945. Washington, United States Government Printing Office, 1945. This is not merely an official government report, but one of the central documentary monuments of Allied victory, presented in a deluxe named binding to one of the key British commanders of the war. General George C. Marshall, U.S. Army Chief of Staff from 1939 to 1945, directed the astonishing expansion of the American Army from a small interwar force into a global instrument of war. His report covers the decisive final period of the conflict, from the build-up to Normandy and the liberation of Europe to the defeat of Japan. The recipient could hardly be more significant. Portal was Chief of the Air Staff from 1940 to 1945, Marshal of the Royal Air Force, and Britain's senior air strategist. Within the Anglo-American command system, Portal and Marshall sat at the same level of Allied decision-making: Marshall as America's principal army strategist, Portal as Britain's principal air chief. Both served within the machinery of the Combined Chiefs of Staff, the body through which British and American high command coordinated global strategy. Their professional relationship was direct and consequential. They met and worked through the great Allied conferences and strategic committees that determined the war's direction, including the conduct of the bombing offensive, the allocation of resources between Europe and the Pacific, and the timing and support of the invasion of northwest Europe. Portal's RAF strategy and Marshall's army strategy were not separate worlds, but interlocking parts of the same Allied design. The binding makes the status of this copy unmistakable. It was produced not for ordinary distribution, but as a named presentation copy for Portal himself - the British air chief whose command stood beside Marshall's army command in the Allied war effort. A superb survival, beautifully preserved, and a remarkable association between two of the most important Allied commanders of the Second World War.

Also contains a List of Illustrations, including Victory in Europ…e; Fortress of Europe; Operation HUSKY; Operation AVALANCHE; From Cassino to the Arno; Final Offensive in Italy; Operation OVERLORD; The Normandy Beaches; Breakout; Operation ANVIL; Battle of France; Path of the Red Army; Ardennes Counteroffensive; Closing the Rhine; Battle of Germany; Victory over Japan; Burma Campaign; Japanese Operations Against U.S. Airfields; The Great Ocean; Southwest Attack; Central Pacific Advance; Battle of Leyte; Theaters of Operations; Battle of Luzon; Philippine Liberation; Okinawa; Planned Assault on Japan; The Arena of Victory; and Zones of Occupation in Germany and Austria. Because of the very bulk of the information plus the blank spots of essential secrecy, it has been difficult for the public to place the developments in their proper perspective. It now becomes possible to examine them in retrospect, with an emphasis more nearly approaching that which history is likely to give them. Contains an advertising related disclaimer, as several local advertisements are at the back of this booklet and were used to defray costs of the local material included in this compilation. Includes separate lists of White and Colored servicemen of Wilkes County. Wilkes County, named for British politician and supporter of American independence, John Wilkes, is considered Georgia's first county established by European Americans; it was the first of eight original counties created in the first state constitution on February 5, 1777. The other seven counties were organized from existing colonial parishes. Wilkes was unique in being made up of land ceded in 1773 by the indigenous Creek and Cherokee Native American nations in their respective Treaties of Augusta. Its location was unique due to its close proximity to the Atlantic seaboard fall line. Between 1790 and 1854, Wilkes County's area was reduced as it was divided to organize new counties following the growth of population in the area. The Georgia legislature formed the counties of Elbert, Oglethorpe, and Lincoln entirely from portions of Wilkes County. Wilkes also contributed part of the lands used in the creation of Madison, Warren, Taliaferro, Hart, McDuffie, and Greene Counties. Wilkes County was the site of one of the most important battles of the American Revolutionary War to be fought in Georgia. During the Battle of Kettle Creek in 1779, the American Patriot forces were victorious over British Loyalists. Settlers increased pressure on the federal government to remove Native Americans from the region, including the Five Civilized Tribes from the Southeast. Congress passed the Indian Removal Act in 1830 and the government forcibly removed most of the members of these tribes to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River. None of the battles of the American Civil War was fought in or near Wilkes County. But here President Jefferson Davis met for the final time with the Confederate Cabinet, and they officially dissolved the government of the Confederate States of America. Wilkes County was the last-known location of the gold rumored to have been lost from the Confederate Treasury. The present-day Wilkes County Courthouse was built in Washington at the site of the cabinet meeting.
