By the mid-1800s, the region boasted approximately 15,000 acres of apple orchards, significantly contributing to food production and local economies. The diversity of locally distinct apple varieties, shaped by centuries of both natural and human influences, represents a valuable genetic heritage. However, the last seventy years have witnessed a dramatic decline in the traditional orchards of Gloucestershire, with the area shrinking to about 3,000 acres.
