Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good+. Later issue. Bohnâs Scientific Library; 19 cm; 1013 pages; 19 cm. Two volumes, xvi, 471 and viii, 518 pp. With 24 pages of publisher's advertisements dated 1887 at the rear of each volume. Title pages with the original Henry G. Bohn imprint dated 1854, but the dated advertisements show this set was issued in 1887 or later. Bohn titles were reissued with unchanged title pages for decades, and the publisher's catalogues at the rear are the only reliable evidence of date. Provenance: Volume I inscribed at the head of the title page to Coleman Sellers, 1827-1907, the Philadelphia engineer whose Kinematoscope of 1861 was an early motion-picture device, from his son Horace, Christmas 1889. The text is that of the first English edition, translated by William Howitt from Ennemoser's "Geschichte der Magie" of 1844, with an appendix of the most remarkable and best authenticated stories of apparitions, dreams, second sight, somnambulism, predictions, divination, witchcraft, vampires, fairies, table-turning and spirit-rapping selected by Mary Howitt. Ennemoser, 1787-1854, was a Tyrolean physician and a leading advocate of animal magnetism, and his history reads the whole of magic through mesmerism and somnambulism. The set evidently descended to Horace's son Charles Coleman Sellers, 1903-1980, biographer of Charles Willson Peale and librarian of Dickinson College, and penciled accession notes record its gift to the Dickinson Library in 1959 in memory of his wife Helen Earle Gilbert Sellers, 1903-1951. Uniformly bound in the usual Bohn red cloth, sides with elaborate blind-stamped borders and panels, spines lettered in gilt. Cloth lightly toned at the spines, with shallow fraying and chipping at the crowns. Bindings sound and contents clean. Ex-library, with slim painted call numbers to the spines, donation bookplates to the front pastedowns and Dickinson Library blind stamps to the title pages. A good set, ex-library. . Oversize book likely to require additional charges for expedited or international shipping.…
