Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Here is "Literary Sketches and Letters: Being the Final Memorials of Charles Lamb, Never Before Published" edited by Thomas Noon Talfourd, who was Lamb's Literary Executor. This is the Second American Edition, published in 1849 by D. Appleton & Company, in New York. This copy is in…exceptional condition: the ornately stamped brown cloth binding remaining crisp and attractive. The decoration and gilt lettering on the spine is also crisp and bright (the lettering seems as if it had just been printed). Scroll down to read our complete condition report. Charles Lamb, who wrote under the pen name of Elia, was one of England's most treasured essayists. It was he and his sister, Mary, who wrote the beloved classic "Tales From Shakespeare" Which was a faithful and genial introduction to many of Shakespeare's greatest plays. The book here offered was published posthumously (Lamb died in 1834), and was edited by one of Lamb's literary executors. It is a collection of correspondence by Lamb to a number of his close friends and literary acquaintances. Chief among them were Coleridge, Wordsworth and Hazlitt. Some of Mary Lamb's letters are also included. It is almost impossible to do justice to the richness of content of these letters. They are delicious, while at the same time throwing much light on the poetry, literary methods, and lives of some of the greatest authors in English literature. The book came from the collection of W. T. Sparhawk - a particularly interesting name, and has his penciled signature on the front free end-paper. W. T. Sparhawk was Willis T. Sparhawk of Randolph, Vermont. He was a Unitarian minister, having graduated from Dartmouth College. Sparhawk kept a diary, which can be read on line if you do a search for Willis T. Sparhawk. From his diary we can conclude that he had a large circle of friends and associates, and was widely admired . We also learn from his diary that he played flute, (sometimes in public with friends), thought deeply about his religion and the sermons he gave, purchased one of the earliest panoramic cameras with which he took many a picture, and that he traveled west to live at Yosemite (which had just opened to the public), and California. He took his camera with him, recording some very interesting scenes (including Native American encampments). I wonder where those photographs are now? Very interesting to hold this book and think of the man who wrote such an interesting diary. It was a different world than we know.
