Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Child Religion in Song and Story, Book I by Georgia Louise Chamberlin and Mary Root Kern, Published by the University of Chicago, Religious Education, Sunday School Teacher's Music Guide. Fifth Printing 1916. Hardcover Format. OP "Child Religion in Song and Story" First Book : "The Child in His World" was published in 1916 by The University of Chicago as part of its Publications in Religious Education series, as a guide book for Teachers of Sunday school classes for children between the ages of six and eight. The book was written by Georgia Louise Chamberlin and Mary Root Kern. The book consists of lessons, followed by a discrete section of songs and hymns, with music. The following is excerpted from the book's Introduction: "The present volume is one of a series of three, intended primarily for the guidance of teachers in the first, second, and third grades of the elementary division of Sunday school - that is for teachers of children from six to nine years of age. It is hoped that the book will also be serviceable to mothers for use in the home, in the religious instruction of children of these ages. The combined services and lessons presented are the result of experiment in a particular Sunday school. "These studies are based upon the belief that the child under nine years of age receives as much food for the development of the religious life from the songs he sings, the prayers in which he joins, and the texts which he memorizes, as from the actual lesson itself. In the services an attempt has been made so to concentrate all these portions of the service upon one theme as to bring the largest emphasis upon the religious teaching involved. The hymn which exactly fits the general theme is not always readily found, but in difficult cases a song which, if not containing the exact theme of the day, is at least not inharmonious with it, has been selected." SERIES : The University of Chicago Publications in Religious Education - Constructive Studies TITLE : Child Religion in Song and Story ? Book One : The Child in His World AUTHORS : Georgia Louise Chamberlin and Mary Root Kern IMPRINT : The University of Chicago Press PLACE : Chicago, Illinois DATE : (November 1916) EDITION : Fifth Printing STATUS : OP PHYSICAL DETAILS : Academic Text, published for the trade; Contains an Introduction, Lessons and Services, and a section of songs and hymns with printed music, plus a short reading list; xviii + [252] pages; 5 7/8" x 7 3/4"; maroon cloth covered boards with gilt lettering on spine. CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book which has seen use, but which remains clean and serviceable, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR - Spine extremities are compressed and display moderate abrasion; spine surface is somewhat faded, while gilt lettering is still fairly bright; boards display a bit of small water staining, as well as scattered spotting; there is nicking to board edges; text-block edges are toned, else clean. BINDING - The book has seen use, and thus not so tight in the binding as when issued, the leaves opening widely and readily. However, no leaves are detached or loose, the whole being still fairly solid. INTERIOR - There are scattered small smudges and spots, but none of any egregiousness; a few corner crimps and creases, some edge nicking. I believe I spotted a few small pencil erasures, and there may be a few scattered penciled marks, but upon perusal, none readily showed themselves. Basically a clean and presentable interior, ready for service. You can see - shown in one of the pictures provided above - that there were two small cut-outs laid between two leaves (of Noah's Ark and a cow), which must have been part of - the remains of - a Sunday school craft project. I've left these in the book.

This book, written in 1907, offers services and lessons for primary-grade Sunday school teachers and religious instruction in the home, fostering moral growth for ages 6-9 and intended for use in the early 20th century. The author emphasizes reverence and sympathetic interest, encouraging children to express their religious ideas by incorporating songs, prayers, and texts into each lesson. These elements guide young learners through themes of gratitude, giving, relationships within and outside the family, and the concepts of courage, eternity, and greatness. The lessons aim to instill high ideals, inspire lofty aspirations, and shape religious conceptions. They draw upon nature, the Bible, and stories of biblical figures to cultivate a sense of the divine in everyday life and to emphasize the importance of honoring parents and God. The book posits that these lessons have a deep and lasting impact on the religious development of children, shaping their understanding of the world and their place within it. From the foreword: "Favorite Dishes is due to the fact that the noble women who have labored for the best interests of mankind and womankind, in the development of the Women's Department of the World's Columbia Exposition, found time to contribute this collection of recipes, as a means of enabling the compiler to open an additional avenue for women to provide the necessary funds to pay the expenses of a visit to the Exposition.".
