Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Glasgow, in photographs, has a habit of looking directly back at you. Not posing. Not smoothing its hair. Not pretending the washing has been hidden, the tenements freshly moralised, the children arranged by a civic committee, or the rain asked politely to stay off-camera. It looks back with that particular expression of a city that has had enough of being explained by people who arrived after lunch. Oscar Marzaroli?s Shades of Grey: Glasgow 1956?1987 is a great, weighty act of looking. Not tourism, not nostalgia with a ribbon tied round it, not one of those glossy civic exercises where the difficult bits have been cropped out and replaced with a conference centre. This is Glasgow across three decades of streets, faces, closes, demolition, children, prams, workers, old women at windows, boys with cheekbones and mischief, soot, stone, laughter, hardship, and that peculiar Scottish talent for making endurance look like a form of dry comedy. The title is perfect, because grey here is not dull. Grey is weather, tenement wall, pavement, coat, smoke, winter light, institutional paint, a moral atmosphere, and sometimes the only colour honest enough for the job. Marzaroli understood that black-and-white photography does not remove colour so much as remove excuses. Once the decorative business is stripped away, you are left with shape, face, gesture, poverty, pride, damage, wit, and the sudden terrible beauty of a child standing in a street that is about to be demolished by progress, which always arrives with a clipboard and a surprisingly poor sense of humour. There is grandeur here, but it is not the official kind. It is not statues and speeches and ?Glasgow the Great Industrial Whatever? with a brass band somewhere out of shot. It is the grandeur of ordinary survival: people leaning in doorways, children playing where planners would later put regret, women carrying shopping with the air of generals returning from a campaign, streets full of lives that no redevelopment scheme could quite itemise. The camera catches a city being lived in before it is rebranded, conserved, flattened, cleaned up, regretted, romanticised, and finally sold back to itself in tasteful monochrome prints. William McIlvanney?s words give the photographs the right sort of company: not explaining them to death, but standing beside them with the necessary intelligence and sorrow. Between Marzaroli?s eye and McIlvanney?s prose, the book becomes less a record than a reckoning. What was lost? What was saved? What did the city endure? And who, exactly, gets to decide when hardship becomes heritage? This is the kind of book that makes ?urban history? sound far too tidy. Cities do not become history neatly. They shed walls, move families, close yards, erase streets, rename wounds, and then later get sentimental about the very things they were in such a hurry to clear away. Shades of Grey catches Glasgow in that uneasy passage: not as ruin porn, not as sentimental working-class theatre, but as a living place full of people who were never merely background. This copy is in Very Good condition, which is almost indecently well-behaved for a book about a city that knew better than to keep itself tidy for strangers. A substantial, evocative photographic volume from Crappy Old Books, for anyone who likes Glasgow, documentary photography, social history, McIlvanney, Marzaroli, or books that quietly remind you that the past was not sepia, not simple, and certainly not waiting around to be made charming.…
