Shallow burn marks to the top of the spine; faint staining; good only. A few possibly authorial ink corrections. Though published anonymously, Howes and Sabin attribute authorship to John Lowell, Jr. of Boston. A leading Federalist, he was concerned about the rapid grown of the US west of the Mississippi in the vast new Louisiana Territory. Concerned that the land and people would be too large and diverse to govern as a republic, he advocated that the Eastern states secede from the Union. Though this argument for secession was published a full half century before the Civil War and does not center the issue of slavery, it nevertheless evidences a very old strain of sectionalist thinking that no doubt influenced the tensions which led to the later conflict.
