La contree dont nous venons de decrire approximativement les limites comprend l'Esclavonie, entre la Drave et la Save; la Croatie et la Dalmatie, provinces de l'empire d'Autriche; la Bosnie, province ottomane; la Serbie proprement dite, principaute vassale de la Porte, et plusieurs districts turcs au sud de ce dernier pays. Enfin, a l'extremite des pays serbes, du cote du midi, au sommet de ce grand triangle, se trouve un petit etat independant: c'est le Montenegro. Le maintien de cette independance au milieu de voisins si puissants est un probleme historique qui commande notre attention.
