Aggiungi al carrello5½'' x 3½''. Divided back. High gloss monochrome post card. Maud took over as captain of the destroyer Somali in September 1942 when her captain, Jack Eaton, was taken ill. SIGNED by Maud to the rear 'Escort in large Russian Convoy 23/9/42 Torpedoed and taken in tow by another destroyer but Board of Admiralty regrets to announce that having been in tow for 3 days in bad weather ship broke in two and sank. Lieutenant Commander C. D. Maud D.S.C. R.N. in command | 23rd September 1942.' Somali was hit in her engine room and although taken under tow by Ashanti, on 25 September heavy weather broke the destroyer's back and she sank. Maud was rescued by Leading Seaman William Goad, who dived into the freezing water with a rope, for which Goad was awarded the Albert Medal. Of the 102 men on board, only 35 were rescued. Maud had spent an hour in the Arctic water and credited his survival to the fact that he had drunk a bottle of whisky after going overboard. As a result, he ordered men under his command to carry a bottle of whisky, which proved to be a popular order. On 1 December 1942 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. Addressed on reverse of second leaf, with postmark, 'To | Robert Eddowes Esqr | Ordnance Storekeeper | at | Portsmouth'. 24 lines of neatly-written text. An unusually emphatic communication, the possibility of fraud clearly being in the air. Begins: 'All your Bills of Disbursements lately transmitted to the Surveyor General's Office are allowed without any deductions, but in looking them over the Surveyor-General Observed that the Vouchers were not Witnessed, I have therefore reced his Commands to acquaint you therewith & to desire that you would for the future Observe that all Articles of Stores which you Shall have the Board's Orders to buy, the Receipt of them into Store is to be Certify'd by the Clerks of the Survey & Cheque & all Payments whatsoever made b you on the Office Account, each of those Payments are to be Witnessed by those two Officers, or in their absence by their Representatives & least you Shoud not understand my meaning I will endeavour to be Still more explicit - Every Receipt that you shall take for Money paid & every Paylist that Labourers shall Sign, the two abovemention'd Officers are to Witness every Such Receipt & Paylist.' A final paragraph comments Eddowes for sending up his bills of disbursements immediately. One of Miles's sons was the political writer William Augustus Miles (1754-1817), for whom see Oxford DNB, and another was the naval officer and author Jeaffreson Miles (d.1844).…
