Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: VG+. Condizione sovraccoperta: G. Jack Morgan (illustratore). 1st. Copies of this small and delightful account of the stage coaching days in Hawkes Bay (HB) on the East Coast of NZ's North Island have become scarce since it was published in 1959 marking the HB Centennial Year. This little book is a fitting repository for the tales of the coaching days, up to the early 1900s when the horse-drawn coaches were replaced by motor vehicles for passengers and goods. In his forward the author (a coach driver himself) sums up some the the hazards of those times on the coaches. For the earlisest services, 1861-1872, there was " the ever-present possibility of being waylaid and put to death, by bands of hostile roving Maoris." This was additional to the more normal, but often terrifying experiences on narrow, precipitious tracks, adverse weather, floods, the sea when the route was along the beaches and the sheer difficulties imposed by rugged terrain, particularly in the hinterland As the title suggest a primary service the coaches provided was ensuring that the mails always "got through", but is is the human (and often humerous) incidents that make this an appealing record of those far-off days --- such as getting the bride (or groom) to the church on time, of the many hotels along the coach routes (where horses were usually changed or passengers overnighted), of characters and VIPs met along the way, of romances that began in those days when travelling any distance on land required horsepower in its truest form. So much is packed into this small book --- incidents, place names now almost forgotten and of the pioneering spirit that dominated those times. First edition of 1959, 162 pages, illustrated by Jack Morgan's evocative chapter head skatches, 15 full page b/w photos, one intext photo, three-fold map at back showing HB coaching routes. Red hard covers with black front titles are VG+, ink gift inscription top FFEP, text block, including illustrations and map, excellent. Plain dust jacket with red titles and decoration is G with small V section missing spine top, some perforations at spine area, front flap fold, few small stains. This small/light book posted at cost.
