Su personal participacion en peritajes médico-forenses aparece recogida en su obra Criterio médico-psicologico para el diagnostico diferenclal de la pasion y la locura, editada en 1868-1869. En el plan de estudios de 1843, el llamado plan Mata, se incluyo la Medicina Legal como disciplina individualizada del curriculum de la Licenciatura de Medicina y Cirugia. Los primeros docentes de la disciplina, en este nuevo plan, fueron Pedro Mata (Madrid). José Arboleya (Barcelona), Miguel Pellicer (Valencia), Mariano Campesino (Valladolid), Serafin Adame (Sevilla), Eusebio Leza (Zaragoza) y José Varela (Santiago de Compostela). Todos ellos fueron nombrados mediante Real Orden de 6 de noviembre de 1843.
