La Autobiografía de sor Antonia de Jesús se inscribe dentro del subgénero de autobiografías espirituales femeninas de los siglos XVI y XVII, entre los que destaca, por encima del resto, el Libro de la Vida de Santa Teresa de Jesús. En su texto, Antonia de Jesús responde al mandato de escritura de su confesor y relata los sucesos más significativos que le han acontecido a lo largo de su vida, donde poseen especial relevancia acontecimientos como su nacimiento, que ya la predestina a formar parte de una orden religiosa, su profesión en el convento y las distintas experiencias espirituales. Sin embargo, por encima del resto, su conversión moral y religiosa se convierte en el eje central de la autobiografía, que vehicula su vida y da coherencia a todo su relato. El yo femenino encuentra en la producción literaria conventual un espacio en el que poder relatarse y dar cuenta de las experiencias de muchas mujeres que estuvieron limitadas a las paredes del claustro durante el siglo XVII. La autobiografía de sor Antonia, ante todo, se erige como un breve ejemplo de la autorrepresentación espiritual femenina barroca, de la forma de entender la propia identidad a ojos de una monja y de su manera de expresarse a sí misma textualmente. Un testimonio sorprendente sobre la vida espiritual de una monja enclaustrada del siglo XVII. Antonia de Jesús. Poco se sabe acerca de esta monja, más allá de lo que aparece escrito en su autobiografía. Antonia nace en Medellín en 1593, hija de padres cristianos. Estos juran a la Inmaculada Concepción que, si Antonia sobrevive, su hija se dedicará enteramente al estado religioso. A los once años y tras la muerte de su madre en el parto, Antonia entra sin ninguna vocación en el convento de franciscanas concepcionistas de Medellín (Extremadura), echando de menos a su padre y dudando de su validez como monja. Todavía sin vocación, profesa bajo el nombre de Antonia de Jesús y vive unos cuantos años en pecado , hasta que sufre un proceso de conversión que cambia su forma de ver el mundo y la religión, al más puro estilo agustiniano. Antonia cambia su comportamiento y empieza a vivir de la forma más devota posible, deshaciéndose de tentaciones y cambiando sus hábitos. Por todo ello, su confesor le manda que redacte su autobiografía, donde destacan su infancia, su conversión, las experiencias místicas y las reflexiones interiores sobre el pecado y su lugar en el convento. Muere piadosamente en 1627, a los 34 años, con aura de santidad. Nicolás Mateos Frühbeck es doctor en Literaturas Hispánicas por la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, en la que también se graduó y cursó sus estudios de máster. Su especialidad es el género autobiográfico de los siglos XVI y XVII, además de las múltiples formas de autorrepresentación literarias de la época. Hace menos de un año publicó su primera monografía, La autobiografía en el Siglo de Oro, en la que realiza uno de los primeros acercamientos panorámicos a dicho género, analizando y clasificando los textos del corpus de acuerdo con sus características principales.
