Aggiungi al carrellopaperback. No Jacket. First Edition. New York. 1962. Dutton. 1st American Edition. Very Good in Slightly Worn Wrappers. Edited & With An Introduction by Ralph E. Matlaw. Essential writings by the founders of Russian literary criticism and social criticism. 226 pages. paperback. D96. Cover design by John Alcorn. keywords: Europe Russia Literature Translated Literary Criticism World Literature. DESCRIPTION - This volume is of major interest and importance, for it presents - for the first time in English - the essential writings of Vissarion Belinsky, Nicolay Chernyshevsky, and Nicolay Dobrolyubov, who are acknowledged to be the founders of Russian literary and social criticism. Included here are Belinsky's impressive reviews, 'Thoughts and Notes on Russian Literature (1846),' 'A Survey of Russian Literature in 1847,' and the great 'Letter to Gogol,' which became Belinsky's testament and the gospel of liberals. In addition, there are Chernyshevskys 'L. N. Tolstoy's Childhood and Boyhood and Military Tales,' and 'The Russian at the Rendez-vous'; also, Dobrolyubov's 'What Is Oblomovitis?' and 'When Will the Real Day Come?' 'The sense of social responsibility, political commitment, and moral vision that informs Russian literature is in large part the product of a critical tradition established in the middle third of the nineteenth century. Belinsky, Chernyshevsky, and Dobrolyubov created an empirical doctrine of vast importance to the progress of Russian letters. In emphasizing the political implications of literature, largely at the expense of aesthetic criteria, its practitioners have at various times been known as 'civic,' 'utilitarian,' 'sociological,' or 'radical' critics. In the Soviet Union they have retrospectively been opted as forerunners of Marxist-Leninist criticism and renamed 'Revolutionary Democrats.' In addition to their places in literary history, they therefore also figure as cultural phenomena, with a vitality and importance rarely accorded to literary figures in modern times.' - from the Introduction. inventory #8906 Very Good in Slightly Worn Wrappers.…
