The author traces the complex political and legal relationships that shaped the region during a period of significant territorial and dynastic change. The book provides a comprehensive analysis of the feudal customs and institutions that governed Holland, Flanders, and Zeeland, examining the legal and administrative structures that underpinned these relationships. It also explores various themes, such as the role of the church, the influence of the Holy Roman Empire, and the impact of the crusades. The book argues that the feudal ties between Holland, Flanders, and Zeeland were not merely formal arrangements but had a profound impact on the development of each territory.
