Hardback. Condizione: New. This is the first accessible volume exploring and analysing evidence for Greek Old Comedy through what remains only in the form of fragments of plays. Hundreds of comedies were written and performed in Athens during this period (roughly 486-386 BCE), but only eleven survive intact from this era; all eleven are by the same author, Aristophanes. We are fortunate, however, to possess a substantial trove of evidence about the many other plays written before and during Aristophanes' career, in the form of what we call fragments: excerpts, summaries, and quotations preserved in later Greek authors, as well as scraps harvested from the Greek papyri of Egypt. These materials are difficult to read, but can wonderfully enrich our sense of what was possible on the Greek comic stage. This book introduces readers to the nature of comic fragments, equipping them with methodological and interpretive tools to engage with this challenging but exciting material. It then presents a survey of important fragments in two parts: in part one, it reconstructs a set of three plays where the surviving material is sufficient to give us a broad sense of the plays' content and staging; in part two, it charts a path beyond play-reconstruction by grouping fragments around key themes to build up a picture of the world created by the shared labour of the lost poets of Greek comedy.…

Provides a comprehensive and systematic treatment of the life and work of Aristophanes A Companion to Aristophanes provides an invaluable set of foundational resources for undergraduates, graduate students, and scholars alike. More than a basic reference text, this innovative volume situates each of Aristophanes' surviving plays within discussion of key themes relevant to the study of the Aristophanic corpus. Throughout the Companion, an international panel of contributors incorporates material culture and performance context, offers methodological and theoretical insights into the study of Aristophanes, demonstrates the relevance of Aristophanes to modern life, and more. Each chapter focused on a particular play is paired with a theme that is exemplified by that play, such as gender, sexuality, religion, ritual, and satire. With an emphasis on understanding Greek comedy and its ancient Athenian context, the text includes approaches to Aristophanes through criticism, performance, translation, and teaching to encourage and inform future work on Greek comedy. Illustrating the vitality of contemporary engagement with one of the world's great literary figures, this comprehensive volume: Helps new readers and teachers of Aristophanes appreciate the broader importance of each play within the study of antiquityOffers sophisticated analyses of the Aristophanic corpus and its place in literary and cultural historyIncludes chapters focused on teaching Aristophanes, including one emphasizing performanceProvides detailed syllabi and lesson plans for integrating the material into high school and college curricula A Companion to Aristophanes is an essential resource for advanced students and instructors in Classics, Ancient Literature, Comparative Literature, and Ancient Drama and Theater.
