Als gewandter Zeichner wurde er zu verschiedenen durch das preußische Ministerium veranlaßten Publicationen beigezogen, so namentlich zu dem von der technischen Deputation der Gewerbe herausgegebenen Prachtwerke: Vorbilder für Fabrikanten und Handwerker' (18211830), für welches er viele Zeichnungen lieferte und einen Theil davon selbst stach und lithographirte [.] Von einer längeren Studienreise nach Italien im Jahre 1830, wo er viel mit Eckermann und dem jungen Goethe [d. i. August von Goethe, der während jener Reise verstarb] zusammen war, brachte er allerlei Früchte fleißiger Studien mit, die er in der Folge als Schriftsteller und Lehrer zu verwerthen wußte" (ADB XX, 685). 1839 folgte er einem Ruf an die königliche Gewerbeschule in Stuttgart, wo er als Professor für monumentale Baukunst und deren Geschichte sowie für Ornamentzeichnen und Modellieren tätig war.
